Automatic RX-8 Mods

Ok guys, I decided to start this thread to help out everyone looking for AT mods. I too am looking, and spent the whole day searching too find very little definite information. I am still unsure as to what is good for the AT, what is reliable and won't mess up the car, and what will actually work/show some improvement. So if you could lets start making a list of the modifications for an AT RX-8 that work and are reliable. Don't post anything that requires major work to get it to work. I am looking for something that is specifically for the RX-8 AT. I will be getting one hopefully in a week or so and want to get a plan as to what I should get for it. So please, post what is good and a link if possible to more information about it. Thanks!

you can basically get the same mods for the auto as the manual.

1)intakes:aem,k&n,mazdaspeed,racing beat,etc... not very difficult to install.
2)catback exhaust:racingbeat, greddy,hks,etc... might need some help
3)midpipe: high flow cats or cat delete... might need help
4)pulleys:agency power, unorthodox racing... never did these so i cant help you out

you will feel a little difference with these mods. i was running the k&n typhoon 2nd gen intake, rp supercat midpipe, and greddy sp2 on my auto when i had it and i absolutely loved it. it was loud but i didnt mind it. it did make a difference for what it was. i mean if your looking for a lot of power you need to go forced induction(turbo, supercharger) but you said you wanted something easy to install. i hope this helps. there is just so many parts its hard to compile a list of everything but this should give a base to work from.

I'm getting a new rear end gear installed. The gear is made by FEED (buying from JonDemand) and mazmart is building my new differential. If you search the far east forum for 4.77 you'll find some info on it. The guys who have done it to the AT there seem to like it. But it is not a quick thing to install, i don't think. I'm spending over 900 plus shipping to get it built, then whatever it costs to have my mechanic install it once it gets here.

I think my mazdaspeed dual muffler exhaust may have freed up a bit of power, or it just feels faster because it sounds cooler

Mazda has admitted that their catback does not increase power.

I'm sure it sounds cooler, though.

Best NA power mod for us now is hi-flow cat or a straight pipe.

Turbos have shown so far that they do gain power, but not nearly as much as MTs.

Pettit is almost finished their Stage II supercharger for the AT. The 4 port motor has responded to supercharging even better than the 6 port MT motor. At 4psi, pettit gained 40whp from the 6 port motor, and 60whp from the 4 port AT motor. Hopefully these larger gains will carry over to higher boost levels. If so, the supercharged 4 port engine could potentially "catch up" to the power of a supercharged 6 port engine at a certain boost level. Of course there are different efficiency levels at different amounts of boost, so this is just a guess. Also, the AT may run into heat or transmission issues. We'll just have to find out!

does the pettit work or do they have a SC for a 6 port?

It wouldn't be hard to put the kit on a 6AT. With some different fuel maps and a little extra transmission cooling, I'd guess the 6MT kit would work on it.

what makes it so hard for MT parts to fit on the AT's? is it because all AT's until '06 have been 4 port and the MT 6 port? If thats so then wouldnt getting parts for a 6 port AT be a whole lot easier?

Yup, things should be generally easier since the 6AT is a 6 port motor, just like all the MT's. Keep in mind that you have a lower rev limit, and you have to consider the heat coming from your transmission and torque converter, though. It's not EXACTLY the same, but you're right, it's a lot closer.

Yeah, I would think any 6MT kit should work just fine on your 6AT since they're the same engine. When you get your turbo or SC tuned, your tuner will just have to take your lower redline into account.

Also, some people on this AT-specific forum have added extra parts for cooling. I'd reccomend looking into those too.

Hope this makes you happy!

Has anyone spotted a "Plug-n-play" type ECU upgrade for the Auto yet....??

Might have to check out the RE Amemiya web site.

the intercepter-x will work you just need to mess with the software a little bit. scott has done one before iirc. i think you just need to change the setting to not use the 2 other ports.

Things I look to eventually upgrade:

1) Body kit
2) Rims- Preferably Volks..
3) Coilover- Not sure which ones.. thinking Teins(sp?). i saw they have several different ones though.. anyone know whats good?
4) Pettit Supercharger
5) Intake

Anything else you suggest, or good brands/models for the products?

when you get the sc you probably have to get rid of the intake
