Auto to Manual while driving?

I have an 06AT, and I have some questions. If I am in traffic and I am in auto mode going 45 mph in 5th gear, and I want to pass someone, can I switch to manual mode and down shift to pick up speed faster? Anything I should know? What about when I shift, I can still keep my foot on the gas right?

Depending on how much pressure your putting on the gas pedal you can "floor it" as the saying goes and even in full Auto mode the ECU will downshift for you and off you go. Sadly as soon as you release the pressure the transmission upshifts once more. On the highway I usualy leave it in the manual/sport/triptronic mode or whatever you wanna call it, makes life on the highway easier.

That's where I usually use the manual mode.. On the highway..

Do you guys shift once it hits redline? Or before that?

Shift wherever you want, as long as it isn't after redline. I don't use the manual shift unless I'm driving the car hard, so just about every shift for me is right before redline.

Thanks for the info.

I love to floor it. Almost redlining in 3rd is fun. I can't wait to redline in 4th sometime. I am going to get either a Greddy SP2 or MS catback. I will floor it even more then I am sure.

Yeah, I have the RP supercat and greddy catback. Sounds amazing. Plus I don't know why you would get a new catback if you aren't going to get any power at ALL from it (like the mazdaspeed catback). At least with the Greddy, you get a few HP.

It is really still up in the air with me MS or Greddy. I have heard the original Greddy SP exhaust, so sound wise how does it compare to the SP2 I wonder...

I have the MS dual muffler and I like it. I think it picked up a couple ponies, or it just feels quicker because it sounds quicker

Greddy SP2 is what I originally wanted until I heard a sound clip of the MS dual muffler, and watched the service department freak out when I mentioned aftermarket mods. With the chance of a CEL, and my service department claiming it is because of the greddy exhaust and it voids the warranty on my cat I am considering MS.

Just curious - What are your redline shift points in the 6AT?
4AT is like 45, 83, 120ish.....

And +1 - dropping into manual and downshifting to pass/accelerate I do all the time. Am only careful about dropping into 1st - and not even sure what is/isn't safe to 1st. Post if you find out!

on my 04 it wont let you shift down to first if your going over like 30 if you try it it will just blink number 2 and not go down, even in manul mode it still has a mind of its own like mine will down shift if i forget to do it when stoping

My 06 downshifts all the time for me. I just quit doing it, because if I am in 3rd, I go to downshift and the ECU downshifts too, so it goes to 1st and it jerks.

I shift around multiples of 30 for the first 3 gears. 30, 60, 90 Not sure after that. As for redlining add about 5 mph for each gear.
