Zex Nitrous Dyno

3 Attachment(s)
Hey guys, I figured I might as well make a new thread about it so that you dont have to read 10 pages to see a dyno:
The mods are listed on my signature

1. this dyno is the closest I can do to simulating REAL ROAD driving power, not dyno power. which means
A. did not pull DSC/TSC fuse
B. did not pull ABS fuse
C. normal temperature
2. The car at the time of dyno, is running at full potential, it has new spark plugs, new coils (well, 200miles), the engine oil is 50 miles old, new tranny oil, 4oz premix
3. The nitrous system is running at 975PSI, fuel system is running at 60PSI which I take it is optimum for both the nitrous system and the fuel system
4. This is on a 65 shot Zex Wet Nitrous kit with no issues, everything is out of box (sorta, I take it my mods don't do jack)+ bottle heater and nitrous pressure gauge
here are the results:
My car NA base dyno, 3rd gear
https://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1196813587
My car with Nitrous system engaged at 4k RPM, 3rd gear

Nitrous to NA comparison, 3rd gear
https://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1196813587
PS: for those of you who has seen my old dyno, the 3whp is from changing the HKS shitty ass filter to a Spectre cone filter/premix

the original thread can be found here:

thankyou and hope you enjoy it as much as I do

Phish806 12-04-2007 06:29 PM

Thats not bad at all ... as i said in the other thread i would like to hit 200 N/A and then the nitrous... if you think about it, with engine management you would most likely break the 200 mark N/A and that would put you at atleast 240 on the nitrous which is not bad at all. Thanks for bein out guinnea pig Taj

tajabaho1 12-04-2007 06:32 PM

I'm always teh guinea pig lol, but yea, hopefully Charles will come chime in on the A/F ratio, which was the primary reason for me to dyno this time

as you can see from the graph, we can't rly sue zex for false advertising as it does add about 54whp at one point or another, but it depreciates after 6k rpm to a final add of about 37whp...which is not bad seeing as it costs 500$+120$ for bottle heater, 300$ more for install......

CnnmnSchnpps 12-04-2007 06:38 PM

Lovin it, taj. Really like the biggass bump in torque right when you engage it. 230whp is not too shabby

Phish806 12-04-2007 06:40 PM

so my assumption is that the AFR is running rich after 6K... it will be interesting to see how it will all work out in the end once tuning is involved...

tajabaho1 12-04-2007 06:40 PM

the torque right there is the ass kick I was talking about in the other thread, u can definitly notice it, which was not that noticeable in the last dyno run

230whp for 900$? (700 if self installed) thats not bad at all, what u guys are forgeting is the cost per whp.....

CnnmnSchnpps 12-04-2007 06:41 PM

Taj it has to wind down the higher you go since you're spinning the engine faster but nitrous delivery is constant. The faster you spin the engine, the less nitrous you are adding per combustion event, so the net added torque will actually decrease with rising RPM. However, since HP = torque x RPM the HP increase will be constant, as you can see from the graph.

CnnmnSchnpps 12-04-2007 06:45 PM

The AFRs are on the rich side, but on the other hand it's good to have a margin of safety. Without tuning you won't know if you're dipping south of RBT or not. If you are, then there's some more power to be freed without sacrificing safety.

As for the cost, nitrous = 40HP for $1000. Greddy turbo = 80HP for $3000+. There is little doubt that the initial outlay is much less for nitrous, you just have to figure in the extra cost over the life of the system for refilling the tank. If you plan to be a heavy user, the turbo becomes more attractive after 6 months to a year.

tajabaho1 12-04-2007 06:45 PM

^ near constant u mean :)

yes, it is almost constant, but it went down from adding 58whp when engaged at 4k rpm down to +37 at 8k rpm, however, that is not a bad thing, it actually helps ALOT in acceleration, which is what Nitrous systems are designed to do, crazy ass acceleration

and this result without tuning is very good (again, price per whp) and I am looking forward to seeing it the results once I tune NA AND with nitrous

I am also now very eager to see what how the system will perform in conjunction with a turbo kit :)

SlayerRX8 12-04-2007 06:46 PM

Not bad. Now get to the track and run low 14's or high 13's.

Phish806 12-04-2007 06:49 PM

NA should run a low 14.... with the nitrous .. mid 13.... thats my guestimate anyway

tajabaho1 12-04-2007 06:50 PM

CS, u don't need 1k for a nitrous system, to get the same result as me, u only need as little as 650 (zex 82021 kit + bottle warmer), that is self installed

however, if u do want to let a professional install it, both the greddy Turbo kit AND the Zex will cost more............

it is generally about 300$ to install a nitrous kit so lets say 1000$ for 40whp installed.......the greddy turbo, installed, will run u about 3.5-3.8k for 80whp........
a bottle lasts me 2-3 weeks depending on the amount of assholes on the road.
I pay 35$ per each fill up

I've seen Greddy turbo 8's run 13.7. I'm guessing taj needs the driver mod, too.

chickenwafer 12-04-2007 06:57 PM

It depends on what environment your car is in. The higher the altitude and the temperature, the slower the car

tajabaho1 12-04-2007 07:00 PM

^ this is probably as close to sea level as possible

slayer: my driving skills are good, I am not cocky

Phish806 12-04-2007 07:01 PM

earlier in the year i ran a 14.2 with no power adder at all... 13.7 seems kinda low for havin a turbo .. but then again there are many factors when it comes to the strip which i am sure everyone knows... not trying to hyjack the thread by the way ..

Shh! :spank:

Yes you can get it done for less than $1k but I would want alot of extras to make the setup feel complete. Remote opener, bottle warmer, purge, gauges... At least I would install it myself so that would absorb some of the cost of the extra gear

chickenwafer 12-04-2007 07:01 PM

Just saying Charles has reportedly run lower than 14's with just N/A mods, no nitrous. So saying a GReddy turbo is only good for 13.7 depends on where the car is running

Phish806 12-04-2007 07:04 PM

ultimate goal for my car ... would be after a 75 shot, tuning, and all of my NA mods to come is to touch the twelves.

chickenwafer 12-04-2007 07:07 PM

You're going to need more spray than a 75 shot, or stupid weight reduction

Phish806 12-04-2007 07:09 PM

yeah i agree ... it would be crazy if i actually hit it .. but it should be something just out of reach for me to strive for ... i doubt i will acutally hit it with that set up but who knows whats to come in the future

SlayerRX8 12-04-2007 07:10 PM

Tell you what taj, if you run 13.5 with that setup, I will jog around the UMD campus naked.

tajabaho1 12-04-2007 07:11 PM

Phish, if you are infact trying to touch 12s, your car NA tuned must run at least 210whp

and as chickenwaffles said, you will need to spray more than 75 shot

I would say you will need at least 150shot, probably a stage 2 nitrous system, and definitly not zex and it must be tuned!

I highly doubt my car is capable of that.........but then again, I might be able to

No offense, but that's not going to happen. Earlier this year I ran a 12.9 @ 107.6 with 340whp and the torque shelf of 340wtq I have on the low end.
