TX WTBRotary's Drummond Build

Well, after much thought and deliberation I felt it was about time to make a build thread.

After going through 3 remans in my late 2005 RX-8 and finally after getting denied for a new reman, I decided it was time for a proper engine for my 8. My old reman only dyno'd 180whp with my mods & a MM tune which means compression was low.

Decided to go with Daryl Drummond as my builder. For the engine I used an 04 ORIGINAL engine, no reman, with 7K miles on the clock that had some autocross use on it.

The Car: Late 2005 Winning Blue Mazda RX-8 GT with 76K miles.

Taking into consideration drivetrain loss of 15-20% should give me a realistic ~220whp

Thats where I was hopping to be, suffered high RPM misfires and only managed 190WHP at 7K RPM. Have not been able to resolve the issue yet, so waiting until summer to try it again.

WTB, don't dyno your 8. If you are happy after getting it tuned just drive it man.

Yeah, I mean I already know roughly what its gonna make. I really don't want to dyno it because of the discrepancies in different dynos etc. I feel I am gonna be happy considering I haven't been able to redline my 8 in over a year... I can't wait for the first WOT run to hear that rotary roar!!!

Lets just say a dyno is not on my list of priorities...

Myself, Charles, and Kane are still not sure what's causing my misfire all components are brand new. I will worry about it in the spring when I can drive it again. In sure it will get sorted out.

how much is one of these engines? Mine has low compression and I'd rather not buy one from mazda since it will likely fail again.

^^^ Its not cheap. Drummond doesn't build his engines to street specifications, He builds race engines. Therefore, I paid a pretty penny for this gem... I would not recommend Daryl Drummond for any average rebuild.

If you would like pricing I suggest you email him at daryl@drummondengines.com

Just take the price of a ported engine from Pettit or Pineapple Racing and more than double it.

Add $1900 and that was the total including shipping... So more like 1.5X a Pettit

My pettit build was under 4K with shipping

Of course my core had 29K on it and was not damaged nor suffered low compression so I was able to reuse housings, irons, and rotors. Just needed bearings, seals, and portwork

The engine I used only had 7K miles with some autocross use, and was an original engine. So I reused the housings, irons and rotors as well...

But you also have to remember I had mine broken in and dyno'd so that cost some extra as well. It would of cost less If I didn't want him to break it in and Dyno it for me but I figured it would be neat to have it broken in and to have a engine dyno sheet.
