it was available free on the web long before a set was ever put on an RX-8 and to answer your question, I cannot recall you ever commenting on Magnecore wires before

olddragger 12-14-2010 02:58 PM

yep i do have the parts but was thinking if i can get rid of some connectors then all the better?
I need to simplify my life.
Just wondered if others had done this.
I will be doing a better engine/chassis ground set up than I have now.
Ray ,I appreciate ALL the help you have given me over the years Bro.

i have an opinion on stock coils and NA applications... all you have to do is look at what Mazda did with the S2 when they lifted the coil off the plate....

But this is an FI thread :)

What was? For the RX-8 application?
I haven't seen anyone on THIS forum "disapprove" of the Magnecor plug wires. They are a bit pricey, though, so maybe that was where any criticism lay in the opinions of others.
Personally, I prefer the Kevlar stranding that MSD has for their core and wrap in between the silicone layers. Makes it a little tougher to build wire sets but I prefer it.

That disclaimer was so we didn't start this BS up again, but I am not surprised.

Yes, some people need to have their hand held to cross the street and you do an excellent job for them. The GM coil wiring diagram existed on the net before an RX-8 ever hit the dealership lots. The truck coil info was also out there. I didn't think they were necessary for an RX-8, but then my main focus at the time was NA. It was a simple connect the dots scenario to determine which RX-8 coil wires went where. IMO there is no magic revelation or patentable ah-hah moment.

As you stated, BHR made it easy with the P&P connectors so that the RX-8 wiring harness didn't have to be cut & spliced. You gave me a set of the connectors and I also purchased the truck coils and MSD wires from you at a later time, which I did and still do appreciate. That said, I don't use them on my NA Renesis and I'm content to leave it at that. My coils sit on the plate too. Mazda probably lifted them up so moisture didn't condense and burn off on the coil potting underneath, eventually building up into a white deposit and further propagating just one more forum wives tale :wavey:

Mine is hard wired, I see no advantage or disadvantage to either way, as long as it is correctly connected, clean and properly routed, it works.

olddragger 12-15-2010 08:15 AM

i may be hard wiring mine also---havent decided yet. Rational is less connectors, less chance of problem?

Been there and done that, Denny, over a year ago. Between Jeff, Kane, and myself, we all figured out what is needed to make the D-585 coil/boosted combo work; add 45-50% dwell time to the OEM settings when your airflow surpasses 300 gms./sec. No additional electronics are needed. There is no magic nor secrets on this one.

I have been past 370 on the MAF and had crazy AFs down as far as the 9s under load, I never had misfires. I did go through plugs like crazy before getting the tune leaner, and I now stay in the 11 - 12 AF range under load.

Gentlemen,

Most of you are incorrect. Kane has the GM D-585 coils as that is what is used in the BHR Ignition System. So does Danny (NgoRX8) and for the same reason. MazdaManiac, as well. 497 other owners, too.

The only kit I am aware of that uses actual "LS-2" coils is the Esmeril kit.

The D-585s have, for a LONG time been referred to as "LS-2" coils but it is erroneous to do so as the LS-2 coils emit only about 40 mA of current while the D-585s emit about 120 mA (according to the guys at MegaSquirt). The popular MSD coils emit 150 mA but at a slightly lower voltage (according to MSD, themselves).

As Kane helped BHR discover in the early days of the "Dwell Time Controversy", RX-8 applications flowing more than 300 gms./sec. and using GM-based coils of any selection typically need to have the input dwell increased from the factory maximum of 3.2 mS to about 4.8-5.0 mS.

As for using LS-2, D-585, or MSD 8245/8246/8247-series coils on boosted applications, they are all electrically compatible with the RX-8 provided the proper wiring scheme is used but the above dwell changes need to be implemented when 300 gms./sec. is achieved. There is no need for the use of ANY kind of external ignition components, boxes, gizmos of any kind in these cases.

Charles, MSD recommends 4.5 dwell under load.

Yeah, I got to retune again....
