? Who with FI is running the LS2 coil?

Just want to get some feedback. This is not a dwell time discussion.
I know Kane has them but he hasnt really been able to drive his car much-----yet.
I dont know of any other FI car with them other than MM?
I know Juan has the MSD version.
Anyone else done this?

MazdaManiac 12-12-2010 11:50 AM

So far, almost every FI car I've tuned in person has had them.
Looking through my customer database (15% of which is FI), more than half of the FI people list LS2 coils as a mod.

I can list user names, but I don't want to "out" anyone that doesn't want to be "outed".

any of them made 320+ whp ?

Easy_E1 12-12-2010 11:53 AM

Everybody! Everybody has them.

Mazurfer 12-12-2010 11:55 AM

As Jeff pointed out, there are others(that I know of as well), but let them chime in if they wish to do so. ;)

Kane 12-12-2010 11:59 AM

I have tuned several FI cars with them, my own included.

NgoRX8 12-12-2010 12:04 PM

Yes, I have them

sure fire way to make sure you have spark, especially with a stupid rich AFR.

Kane 12-12-2010 12:04 PM

Seen 'em light up an 8:1 AFR.... ballsy!

good - just wondering why we never see any evidence of this ...

ShellDude 12-12-2010 12:17 PM

/raises hand -- but no where near 320hp

I have both; the LS2 coils on the trailing plug, and the MSD/LS2s on the leads.

Update -
Leads are MSD Ignition 8247.
Trailings are standard LS2, not the Yukon's.
Spark plugs are set to 32.
No misfires....

The D-585s have, for a LONG time been referred to as "LS-2" coils but it is erroneous to do so as the LS-2 coils emit only about 40 mA of current while the D-585s emit about 120 mA (according to the guys at MegaSquirt). The popular MSD coils emit 150 mA but at a slightly lower voltage (according to MSD, themselves).

The LM7/L59/LM4/L33 5.3 L engines are, essentially, iron-block versions of the LS-2. There are a bunch of other differences to make them truck applications.
At this point, I have yet to find a coil with a higher current output.

ShellDude 12-12-2010 05:45 PM

correction. I have BHR "Yukon" coils :P

SC-ed 12-12-2010 05:48 PM

... and when do you expect to use those "D585-like" coils with no dwell change needed in your kits?
@Charles

olddragger 12-12-2010 09:00 PM

bingo Ray--thanks for picking up on that. There is a slight difference between the "yukons" and the "ls2" coils oem dwell tables.
Maybe a thread needs to be started under "Ignition set ups for FI"?
Open discussion for the thoughts on coil set ups/wires used and why, capacitors used or not? Maybe someone could actually scope a twin power!
Thoughts?

IronTanuki 12-12-2010 09:30 PM

I have the BHR ignition but not a verified 320+ whp. I have hit 400g/s however and could probably pull more with a boost controller with gain functionality.

I could probably contribute to a good argument on why I think the stock coils are not so bad as everyone makes out and how to get the most from them ......

Flashwing 12-12-2010 11:02 PM

Like many things with the RX8, there's the easy way and the hard way.

Why some choose the hard way I don't know...but it's very entertaining.

:lol::lol::lol:

indeed:eyetwitch

I cant necessarily promise anything remotely intelligent from my side though(you may think that already :P ) since I kinda stay f*cked up on pain meds

I can say that I understand dielectric breakdown pretty well, and on any coil dont agree with those folks who are "re-gapping" their plugs to deal with or avoid ignition problems. And it isnt just because I see it as a band-aid... I have a feeling it can easily create another complication
