Turbo Recommends?

Hey everyone. I'm pretty new here, and just recently bought a 2004 Rx8 w/ Lightning Yellow. Only mods it had was a K&N Typhoon Intake System.

Anyways, I was hoping I could get some suggestions on a good turbo kit. I am looking to spend the Least amount of money possible, but still get some good torque (and hp) out of it. So....

1. Would I be cheaper off buying a complete kit? If so, any cheap suggestions that wont wreck my engine?

2. If I am cheaper off getting all the parts seperate, how much would that cost and what exactly would I need?

I know this is a big question to be asking as there are sub-questions, but any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Ty

If I was to go seperate, how careful do I have to be with the parts I get?

stop right there . Don't be another FI failure .

Your best bet will be a nitrous install - have a read up of the nitous threads .

turbo rx8 and cheap shoudn't be aloud to be in the same sentence. Theres a lot to be read about this subject.

yiksing 08-05-2010 12:42 AM

1. What is the rough estimated hp range you are trying to achieve?

2. How much money have u saved up for the FI kit?

3. How much research have you done regarding the engine?

4. What are you thinking of tuning the mods with?

5. Do you want it to be strictly turbo or wouldn't mind supercharged?

+1.

I recommend a Pettit Supercharger.... and off they go at Rockingham.... ;)

RotaryMachineRx 08-05-2010 02:21 PM

:slap:
Since you asked for turbo stuff none of these links contain supercharger stuff; you got alot of reading to do:

Now for tuning you'll most likely need to hunt down a used AccessPORT:
https://www.rx8club.com/mazdamaniac-183/cobb-accessport-discussion-140117/

After you have read all of these threads search for anything else you may have questions about. Helpful things too look at are other peoples build threads. After you do ALOT of research you can then ask questions that aren't so easily found all over this forum. There is no quick and easy; cheap and dirty way to go FI on this car, hence why it is such an enthusiasts car. Doing so WILL give you grief.

The only way 'RX8' 'Cheap' and 'Turbo' can only be in the same sentence if there is a 'NOT' in threre. Ex.- Turbo RX8's are NOT cheap.

You will blow your engine if you turbo it and keep the turbo on for a long time.

There is a 100% chance of it. So, have the money to rebuild your engine or don't do it.

And one day any engine in any car you every buy won't run anymore... 100% chance of that.

If you know how to maintain you engine and keep up with regular maintenance while building up your supporting mods a turbo 13b will last you a long time... it is a never ending process though

FungsterRacing 08-05-2010 09:19 PM

Hold on a minute people lol - - - - When I said "Cheap" I meant around $4000.... If need be a little more than it could be but looking around that price range

RotaryMachineRx 08-05-2010 09:36 PM

^ I just bought the GReddy turbo kit with BOV, gauges and AP; about $6000 (CAD) for that stuff after you include shipping and US exchange rate. Of coarse there is always the route of buying a used turbo kit; that can be alot cheaper but personally I just like buying stuff brand new.... but this is only the beginning, gonna buy midpipe, ignition, CAI, Boost controller and eventually water/meth injection and upgraded turbo. Then I'll need to look into other cooling mods such as a new radiator/intercooler, upgrading my fuel pump and injectors to handle the extra air flow and getting some more gauges. (Oil Temp, Oil Pres., EGT).

As you can see a turbo kit can be relatively cheap; but once you add all the smaller supporting mods to get it to run efficiently and reliably the price adds up... Rx8's aren't cheap and require lots of attention; but with all this said and done they can be effin amazing cars!

czar 08-06-2010 11:06 AM

used kits can be expensive, base kit is just a starting point regardless, i need new couplers when i inspected them, plus missing a few, typical missing the oil lines and oil pan drain back, greddy wants 100$+ for that stupid bolt.

then my mm upgrade was about 2 grand with new injectors, and that is way over a 1 year wait so far. so expensive time consuming, pita to isntall due to location.

WingleBeast 08-06-2010 12:29 PM

There is a used kit for sale here by a good person for 5 k

Wink wink

RotaryMachineRx 08-06-2010 12:52 PM

^ And I believe thats with a discounted tune from MM as well is it not?

Krazed_Rx8 08-06-2010 01:53 PM

Buy this kit: http://www.cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/T...Q5fAccessories

It'll give u about 400whp

bse50 08-06-2010 02:34 PM

4000$ is not even to be considered a budget for a turbo build unless you can build your own parts. Double that and come back. In the mean time searching and reading will help you a lot in picking the right route.

Krazed_Rx8 08-06-2010 02:41 PM

$8-12k and your on track .

RotaryMachineRx 08-06-2010 02:59 PM

$4680.33 for GReddy Kit + BOV (New)
$694.27 for AP + MM tune
$648.97 for Boost, A/F, Fuel Pres., Lotek Pod
$500 for Misc. stuff that I may need during installation (I'll say $500 to way overshoot actual cost)
GRAND TOTAL: $6523.57 (CAD) Yes that's Canadian Dollars with about $0.94USD for every $1CAD; shipping and taxes included...

As you can see from my above post I have alot more planned but for a beginning I'd say a functional turbo kit is 6-12k (USD).

Renesis07 08-06-2010 03:22 PM

Nitrous / AP/ Midpipe/ lightweight wheels/flywheel = better way to spend $4,000.

RotaryMachineRx 08-06-2010 03:42 PM

^ So little gains from the flywheel though would only do that if I was already replacing clutch.... obviously not from my own experience and not trying to start an argument but from what I've read. And where do you find good Lightweight wheels with rubber for less than 3k? I guess depending on the sizes you are looking at... but I'm thinking all that would run you more around 5-6K, especially if you want to get that stuff in Canada; which the OP would.

Mawnee 08-06-2010 03:56 PM

Actually, I built my kit for about 3k including the Accessport.....but I built it. Over 300rwhp on low boost and a crappy tune... more coming soon with a proper tune :D:
