is it me or does everyone have problems with their transmission? This is gonna be the 5th time i gotta take my rx8 cause the transmission messed up. first 3 times it was the syncros, then shift fork, and now its the syncros again. and the worst part is that i wasn't even racing when it happened. I dunno just wanted to see if anyone else has problems with their or its just mine

 

i recently got a brand new tranny for my 08. the support bracket that holds all the tranmissions together broke

 

i havent had problems with mine, but its really not supriseing. Not many trannies are designed to regularly rev to 9k RPM.

 

Ummm , well yeah the rx8 tranny = POS JUNK. What tranny fluid were your running? How many miles of use? I feel bad for the rx8 racers lol. Im gonna be swapping mine once i get the cash though so im not complaining .

 

actually the RX8 tranny isn't junk and lots of people have used it with engine mods that far surpass what 99.9% of owners could ever hope to see. I'm not referring to just NoS and daily driving FI, we're talking people who race for more then a hobby.

But hey, this is the internet and people with no real clue about anything can say anything they want just to make a post... maybe i'm one of those people. then again, maybe i'm not.

 

Well, who races the rx8 overhauls the transmission often as we can read from several posts here. The fact is that breaking a transmission can be accepted, having to wait for it to be repaired for the 5th time is a pain.
All in all our trasmission is not bulletproof but after the 5th repair i would doubt who did the rebuild or the driver.
Can't you ask for a new one?

 

Mine works just fine. Never an issue. Shifts smooth and solid.

a tranny that can hold under 10,000k and over 150mph is not a POS. Its just that these trannies are asked to hold up under conditions that 90% (out of my a$$) of all transmission on the market could not.

Im sure its a cost/benifit for mazda. Make the tranny bulletproof and up the price by a few thousand. Or make a tranny with a certian fail rate and replace those few.

at your 5th rebuild though I would start taking it to other shops, or if its under warranty demand a whole new unit.

 

I had the bearings replaced in mine.

A 2009 transmission should swap in no problem. Honestly if you have to come out of pocket for one that would be the way to go.

the 04-08 tranny is known to be "ok" for street use but not so for racing.

Fixing these tranny issue is costly "enough" to get Mazda's attention.This is one of the reasons why Mazda has to come up with a new box for 09+

09+ tranny is a direct swap to the older one. no issues.

I drive mine easy. Im at 49K miles now, I change my fluid like every 10-15 K. Thats more than enough for tranny. but starting just 2 months ago when it was cold(around 20-30 degrees), it was impossible to shift into reverse, sometimes not even first. It never happened before. Now its warmer and its getting better. but thats not acceptable to me. and Im going to have them look at it This wednesday or thursday.

 

Or we could buy the Syncro Saver Kits we sell to prevent issues like this happening and spending hundreds on costly rebuilds and replacements...

Slamming the gears is not the only way to damage synchros but, to quote somebody, what do i know?
Now please tell us why the synchros tend to go south too often.

 

Obviously you're once again simply pushing your products on someone. I've come to expect this of you and your bosses at Fluid Motorsports, it's okay Brice. You're just a sales guy and you're simply doing your 'job'.

As for me not understanding, quite the contrary. I've had my transmission replaced for bad synchros so I know all about this issue. Besides, I probably have more experience working on cars then you do so don't confuse yourself or others by thinking you are intellectually on the same automotive level as I am, becuase you're not. You sell parts, stick to what you know... (or at least think you do)

OP: to answer your question; NO, everyone does not have problems with their transmission. Early models had problems with the shift forks and Mazda issued a TSB for them.
You mentioned that you weren't racing when it happened...do you race at other times? (either on the street or track, I'm just wondering what kind of use your car gets)

how's your clutch pedal? how's the clutch? what fluids are you running?

Sorry but i still think the rx8 transmission is a pos. Although i would like to listen to your logic behind why you think its not considered a pos. Just because of marketing reasons? Id rather have a bulletproof tranny then one that costs less. How does the 09+ trannies hold up with FI? Just wondering if i should go this route. :S

 

636: not sure if that was directed at me or not but I don't think the transmission is a POS.
I'm pretty sure a lot of the transmission replacements that happened in the past were a result of bad clutch pedals and not necessarily bad transmissions.
Just look at all the companies that have tried to fix the pedal. Mazport / Fluid brace, BHR welding, Mazda bracket, etc

Dont' get me wrong, I'd LOVE a bulletproof transmission as well but I've got almost 30k on my 2nd transmission with a welded clutch bracket and it's been perfect.

As for the 09, it's supposed to be a beefier transmission but I don't believe there are sufficient FI cars with that transmission to derive any true data as to it's real potential with added hp. We'll have to wait and see
