Project hardtimes/rx8

Well I know some have seen the last post of me thinking about to an engine swap well the route I took was takin it to Turblown to have my engine rebuild a turboed hopefully. My engine only had about 40,000 when it gave on me last month. Rotarys are expensive I think but as everyone says u gotta pay to play. After pulling the engine my self which I do see doing again, so after the dropping it off and couple days later got the call that I had bad housing, I'll post pics of this progress at time go by

engine mod list :
street port
rx7 seals
engine oil loop line mod
kgparts fuel rails
fidanza flywheel

List will be updated as time goes on...

Good to see your staying with it man. Does turboblown specialize in Rotaries? You should have sent it to Mazmart.

I do not know about their history with Rotaries but they work on them.

They acutally do, when I went to drop my engine off they that a 20b and acouple rx7's there. I can say they do have some good quailty work and if u can think or dream about th sky is the limit. I havnt really heard to much about mazmart about doing a rebuilds besides a water pump. Plus I rather be able to go to a place were I can visually see what going on instead of paying $3000+ on an engine and I'm not able to know what going on or go back and check on progress all on all it's more convient for me.

yes he does. he's currently finishing up my turbo build.

couple of questions:
When I was over there monday, Elliot showed me your motor. .It has some really sharp edges on the housing where they meet the irons. To the point of slicing your finger open if you're not careful. First rotary i've seen like this..

What oil were you using in that motor? and when was the motor replaced?

9krpmrx8 03-04-2010 11:36 PM

Looks like a legit place. I have actually heard of them from some where, I think because of that line loop mod. Looks like they can handle it just fine. Hope everything goes well.

tubingchamp 03-05-2010 01:00 AM

The rotors look carboned up as hell..

The type of oil I was usin was 5w-20 Valvoline non sync and the last time I reaplacrd the motor was right at 30,000 the rear rotor had went out.

RX8YA 03-05-2010 07:56 AM

Yeah that rotor looks crazy with all the carbon did you drive it red line on a normal basis?

sauceyI986 03-05-2010 09:28 AM

Yeah I did red line I have a my transmission it's kinda hard not to in this car.

9krpmrx8 03-05-2010 10:43 AM

Yeah the whole red line a day, to keep carbon away is BS for the most part. Even engines that were red lined daily are choked up by carbon. My first two motors were red lined everyday and then some and even with 3,000 or less mile oil changes they each suffered the same fate.

I hope this build goes well, you going to run the SOHN adapter and Premix from day on on this motor?

sauceyI986 03-05-2010 02:03 PM

I'm not going to run an omp any more I'm just going to premix the car, plus I don't plan to use this as my daily driver anymore

sauceyI986 03-27-2010 02:15 AM

Bump

RX8YA 03-27-2010 09:15 AM

Wow maybe i should just give my car an apple instead of the redline..........ill throw an apple in the trunk a day.....

Well, you're looking at about +7 HP gain per apple, so you do the math. The fermentation gasses could lead to lean conditions, so you'll have to tune appropriately.

sauceyI986 03-27-2010 12:41 PM

Yes I have thought about that.this will be custom turbo build as well yes I will make sure this will be tuned properly

BrightEyes 03-28-2010 06:26 PM

what kind of driving were you doing with this car when it was your DD?
lots of highway miles? or mostly city driving?

sauceyI986 03-28-2010 09:45 PM

no this engine just mainly city and highway, no trip out of town on any thing of that nature at all. i didnt really do much with this motor, and yes o forgot to put this was one of my daily drivers

BigTurbo74 03-28-2010 10:07 PM

Did Elliot ever send you the photos of your coated bearings and oil pump?

9krpmrx8 03-28-2010 10:43 PM

Any pics of the rebuild?

sauceyI986 03-28-2010 10:49 PM

Yes I did get the link for the pics of the bearings and oil pump. With all this work in th future I like to try to get at least 450hp it's a goal but well se what happends

The reason i asked is because i read somewhere on here that long road trips are good for the engine, i guess to really let it breath and get all that nasty carbon out. I may be wrong, but i'm about 95% sure that i read this somewhere here.

sauceyI986 03-29-2010 04:22 PM

I let my car breath plenty times with 8000rpm shifts

Static rpms are not the best for our engines :)
is that a modest mouse reference in your user title btw?

Anyway saucey, have you picked up what oils to use with your turbo build? Those ports look cool, any front pics?

sauceyI986 04-04-2010 08:59 PM

No Im not sure just yet Ima going to the builder decide which is best because my very first was using royal purple when the second rear rotor failed and the second was penzoil. So what ever he feels that is best that what I'm goin to run with.

L337fpc 04-05-2010 05:26 AM

subscribed, i'm thinking about porting as well. You have to post videos when your engine is back together.

Thought i do a bump on this thread.. and get it moving again yes it has been a while but I'm so close..

09Factor 02-19-2011 09:08 AM

any newer/updated pics?

sauceyI986 02-19-2011 09:46 AM

They pics will be coming pretty soon as I make the hand off to El this coming week. im just ordering parts and what not so I can be ready for the next stage which is to turbocharge this thing. I will post pics when the engine is all put together.

As far as the turbo manifold I'm going to see if it is possible to have the top mount moved over to the left about and inch and push it back a little bit. I need to take a look at the ecu. There is a company that makes a harness that allows people to move the Ecu, ems to were ever they need it to be, I like to put in in the glove box.l myself and after all said and done get a full wire tuck done one the engine.

All I know this whip is going to be a beast..

Beodude 02-19-2011 10:17 AM

Sucks you had bearing failure so much. I have a feeling it was the 5w20...

sauceyI986 02-19-2011 12:25 PM

Yes it was weird noise i had hurd a loud ass noise from the engine after that it was done deal. But I didnt notice when the engine gave out at both time it happens when I was barley taking off.

ronx8 02-19-2011 12:35 PM

I've heard people doing just fine on 5w20.

But I'm sure 5w20 and some of the warmer weather in Arizona doesn't mix well

Turblown 02-19-2011 01:04 PM

Got a link to this harness adapter? Going to the glove-box sounds like a great idea. I can put the turbo where you want. We are getting things ready for assemble on monday. Photos to come. On a side note I just spoke with another Renesis owner we ported/built an engine for, over 8k miles running strong.

sauceyI986 02-19-2011 03:26 PM

Here is the link for the company called boomslang for the wire harness.
http://www.boomslang.us/

I know the harness is made to spec the price starts off at $250 but 'm not sure how long it may need to be to reach guess i make some measurement when that comes around.

True, but from the UOA's I've seen, oils shear off weight pretty quickly. Like within 1,000 miles. Most of the people that used 10w30 had it shear down to a 20 weight. So I'd rather have a heavier oil, that way when it does shear down, you still have protection.

Turblown 02-20-2011 06:04 PM

10w-40 weight with coated bearings will cure all bearing wear issues..

sauceyI986 02-21-2011 02:06 PM

KG Fuel Rails Just came in need to go pick them up at Fedex. Man i ready to get off of work...

You'll have to relocate the power steering module too.so that's another harness, and then the input to the chassis harness from the ecu that's in the ECU box too. so you'll have to relocate that connector or run another length to it too. I've looked into this. My last quote on just the general harness for the OBD2 on the ECU was something like $350~$400, so you may be looking at around a $600 job depending on how it's done, and if you have to buy everything you need.

Personally, the $350~$400 for just the base harness alone is too much for me to justify it. If you can find the connectors, I'm sure we could make the harnesses at a fraction of the cost.

sauceyI986 02-21-2011 02:53 PM

cott dam: Yea i was quoted ask for 5ft just for a general idea for the ecu to readh in the glove box was $450. I still in the air but i like to do it and run the wiring thru the left fender just to get it out the way of the turbo. it almost hand in hand move ecu creates less piping for turbo manifold. But im like now every mod is dam near $300min

yea, like I said... if you can find the connectors, we can probably make a harness for a lot cheaper. I just haven't been able to find where to buy the connectors.

there are a couple of places were i might go get a transmission if im not able get one over the rx8 for sale section , calledl a few places one i advised him my car will be boosted and they will cover a 6 month warranty even if i mess the gears up on and will replace it for free. which does sound to bad, another place has a year warranty but is like $950.

sauceyI986 02-28-2011 12:14 PM

found a transmission just waiting on that to be ready so it can be shipped.
