Mazsport's High Performance Transmission Upgrade!

After several months of testing we are proud to release a heavy duty alternative to the factory 6-speed transmission.

The transmission itself is a 5-speed unit based on components from various Mazda transmissions that have proven reliable in street, strip and road race applications. This transmission is capable of handling 450rwhp in our standard version, or with a few additional internal modifications can handle even higher power levels.

This was designed as a plug and play replacement for the 6-speed and is shipped complete with everything required for an easy installation. If you have the ability and tools to change a clutch you have what’s required to perform this conversion in about an additional 1-2 hours.

We have replaced the factory PPF with a new chromoly design, incorporated an additional chassis stiffener into the new transmission mount and maintained all factory functions as well. The shifter is in the original location, retains the factory boot and NO modifications to the interior are required.

Here is a link with more information on our website.

We appreciate your continued interest and support in our products for the RX-8, Scott

great job scott.

did you measure the diff in weight? has got to be a good difference.. in the good way..

beers

CnnmnSchnpps 04-18-2008 10:13 PM

Very cool! The FI guys should be all over this.. Good call on giving the option on the 5th gear ratio.

I would still like to see an upgraded 6spd for us NA guys though..

wow i think i might have mentioned this before. a rx8 6 speed option for a new 5 / 6 gear ratio set would be a great thing.

allows the lower rpm on cruise without replacing the rear gear.

Exciting

kersh4w 04-19-2008 02:21 AM

thats a really nice job scott. good to know there is a solid replacement if my transmission ever goes.

Mazurfer 04-19-2008 08:35 AM

Excellent Scott..................Kudo's. :)

MazsportScott 04-19-2008 01:30 PM

Thanks for the compliments guys!

Swoop the weight is very similar between the two, the strength is night and day.

eddybear 04-19-2008 01:36 PM

Scott:

This sounds awesome for the M/T guys, I know however, that quite a few A/T guys in places other than USA would love to see some conversion kit from A/T as well. Imagine if you paired this with the rest of items, PCM, ECU, Wiring Harness etc.

Just something to think about....

turborx8 04-19-2008 01:57 PM

I paid off all my credit cards last month and I am 100% debt free.

It's mods like this that make me want to be in debt!!!!

It's only a matter of time before I crack under the preessure and order this.

eddybear 04-19-2008 05:02 PM

based on ur sig, ur debt was worth it :)

halimsteven 04-19-2008 08:03 PM

this will be my next year project, just wait for my phone call....

Razz1 04-19-2008 08:34 PM

i would think the brace that replaces the ppf would have to weigh less than the ppf..

i was hoping..

Mazsportscott, for all that is holy, perform this magic for the automatic transmissions too.

shaunv74 04-20-2008 03:19 PM

Nice!! Congrats. That looks like a great addition for a Turbo RX8!

Are the ratios "geared" more towards a turbo street application with taller ratios.

Is it made to mate with the existing 4.44 final drive ratio or do you recommend a different rear end as well?

Also could you customize ratios for people depending on their desired applications

EG: drag strip vs. street vs. road racing?

And last question:
Will you be releasing a 6speed version for NA cars with upgraded internals for reliability improvements. For those of us finding ourselves burning out our synchros etc and just wanting a trans. that will be OEM swap and last longer?

Jasonawojo 04-20-2008 07:31 PM

Nice work Scott. As the earlier model years age, many will likely be looking for more reliable replacements.

BigRed 04-20-2008 07:41 PM

nice work mazsport! badass!!!!!!!!!

tajabaho1 04-20-2008 08:09 PM

wow, finally! congrats man!

Oh, man... I think you just put the idea of "The Mazsport Rear End Upgrade" in Scott's mind! He's always working on something! hahaha!

kersh4w 04-20-2008 09:08 PM

its only a matter of time before the mazsport 16x is released...

lol.

olddragger 04-21-2008 09:16 AM

Sum bitch!
Sweet and with the torque curve of my S.C. this would be really good.
Question please---i have that beatiful double resonated midpipe of yours and i had to make some spacers for my tunnel braces to fit . if that be the case then this would also bolt to the spacers? no probs?

VarneyMazda 04-21-2008 09:24 AM

Thanks Scott for always producing greay products that we all can benefit from!

:Eyecrazy:

Schimmle 04-21-2008 01:31 PM

Dear Lord I need to win the lottery. There are so many things I want and this is just another one. Got an exhaust, D.R. Mid-Pipe, Ignition Solution, now just need to save up for a TurboKit, and now this...I so hate you but I just can't. Here we go...time to start my wish list all over again!

Jedi54 04-21-2008 01:33 PM

nicely done guys! It would be a bit weird only having a 5 speed but this seems like a good option for the FI crowd.

kersh4w 04-21-2008 01:44 PM

yeah.

scott, why the decision to go with a 5 speed? is this tranny based off the rx7 tranny?

It's a rebuilt rx7 tranny and the 5speed makes more sense for people with FI.

rgonza 04-21-2008 01:58 PM

Practically same power that the factory hold with fews mods.

The super efficient gearing makes having a 6th gear obsolete.

shaunv74 04-21-2008 02:54 PM

I would have thought the broader torque curve was the reason.

c41250n 04-21-2008 03:08 PM

this is sweet!

mazsportmantis 04-21-2008 04:17 PM

boys with toys.....Thank you for your interest in our latest product. The phone has been ringing off the hook today. Thanks for the busy Monday. :evil_laug

Schimmle 04-21-2008 04:23 PM

Thats what you get for bringing out something that we've all needed for quite some time. I don't feel sorry for you one bit. LOL

bose 04-21-2008 04:27 PM

YES!!! I totallt stoked on this, my 4th gear is crapping out and I didn't want to put another stock trans. in. Thank you Mazsport. Thank you.

When I spoke with Scott about this a couple weeks ago, he mentioned a couple of obstacles that are, for the time being any way, keeping them from doing a 6spd.

1) Tooling up to produce replacement, heavier duty wear items (syncros, etc) is expensive.
2) Even with heavier duty wear items, there are still some intermittent issues they've had trouble tracking down.
That being said, the 5Spds they've had running around do have longer legs so the revs at cruise are a bit lower than the stock 6spd. Not that any of us drive in manner condusive to fuel economy any how.

Im sure, if there were good reason and enough interest, Scott'd re-address the 6spd situation, but this may be the best solution (Mazsport has found it to be) on the cost/performance curve. And right now, it's the best/only solution on the curve.

olddragger 04-22-2008 03:57 PM

plus the new ppf is solving probs most dont even know they have?

drifter_d 04-22-2008 04:47 PM

5-speed trans is fine with me - I'm seriously trying to remember the last time I used 6th gear...!!!

olddragger 04-22-2008 09:16 PM

Happens when your are on the "wrong side of the road"
get it?

kersh4w 04-23-2008 12:14 AM

scott, do you know the rpm at 80mph for the .719 5th gear for a stock n/a rx8?

3500 rpm at 80 and 3000 rpm at 70

cflrx8 04-23-2008 02:17 AM

Well i should know since I'm driving it around. :)

VarneyMazda 04-23-2008 05:38 AM

I'm happy this uses rx8 clutch kits. And I agree the 5 speed is fine with me I don't need the extra gear I never use it anyways

bose 04-23-2008 09:24 AM

I have been wondering, with this conversion kit, would I be able to fit it with PPG gears?

Schimmle 04-25-2008 02:19 PM

a-a-a-n-n-n-d-d-d...BUMP!

rgonza 04-26-2008 08:49 PM
