How long has your Esmeril Turbo Lasted?

I am curious to see how long it takes before the esmeril turbo itself goes out on the kit. I understand that this issue has been resolved by Esmeril racing and a differnt better quality name brand turbo is now being offered in thier kit. Still curious to see how many miles everyone has gotten out of thier turbo before it began to fail or if yours is still up and running.

My turbo had <2500 miles on it with no hard use at all (4lb spring and under 6500 RPM due to new motor and lack of tune) Now i have a wobbly shaft and am getting blue smoke. Time to upgrade.

Also, not that i actually expect it to happen, but maybe a discount from esmeril if upgrading to thier new turbo if the original turbo fails. They have shown that its the weak point in the kit since they have choosen themselves to no longer offer this turbo as an option. SO maybe send the old one back and get the new turbo at a certain amount off? jsut an idea, but once again, highly doubt it will happen lol.

Phish,

My no brand Esmeril turbo lasted at least 9600 miles and it is still going strong making 9-10 psi of boost (with open wastegate, no boost controller). I replaced it because once in a while it blow out a puff of black smokes from leaking seal on the exhaust side. I do not want to get in trouble with the cop. Mine last pretty long because I always give the car a cool down before I shut the engine off. I change oil every 2000 miles or so (20W50 Amsoil Syn). I had this turbo on my original engine before I blew it during tuning. I put around 1500 miles before tuning (breaking in the kit, no boost). With new engine (old engine, new rear housing, new esmeril seals) I put in at least 8000 miles on it before I replced it with Precision Turbo. I got into boost very often when I drive. I would say at least 8-10 times when I drove 24 miles to work. The shaft still got no play when I removed it out of the car. I would still be driving that thing if it doesn't blow out black smoke!

Yeah, mine had gotten to the point where it would blow quite alot of smoke. Not just a puff here or there. I thought it was due to me bign so rich and not having a tune yet and also premixing. But i pulled the piping off the turbo to check and i have shaftplay and oil.

hey luckycat, your in the minneapolis area right? I was wondering if you installed the kit yourself or had a shop in town do it. Also did you rebuild the engine yourself? I am looking at going the esmeril way but I am pretty sure my engine is loosing compression and needs a rebuild first. sorry for off topic, just a question

I believe he had Chris from Esmeril do his install and his rebuild once he had motor trouble. Pretty sure thats what he has told me in the past. I did the initial install of my turbo kit. Then when the motor went, i pulled the motor out myself and sent it off for the rebuild. I then had it shipped back and re installed everything. That may be a route you want to go to cut down on cost.

I am living in Rogers which is 7 miles or so on I-94 north of Maple Grove in Minneapolis. I am new to rotary as this is my first rotary engine car. One of my friend help me installed the kit. Installing the kit wasn't that difficult. It just tedious work because of all the tight spaces that everything has to fit into.

Chris helped rebuild the engine after it damaged during the tuning session. As Phish said, it would be cheapest if you can remove engine out yourself and ship it to engine builder. Removing engine was probably the easiest part. It took us like 15-20 mins to remove it out of the engine bay. But if you live in the area and would like to see how the kit looks on the car and how it feels you can PM me.

My old turbo has no shaft play but it did has some oil around the compressor area. 9600 miles and seeing boost every drive is pretty good for a no brand turbo.

ebay turbos, hilarious... If you can't afford at least a BW you shouldn't have a turbo in the first place.

You're running the 6265 journal bearing, correct? Would you mind sharing your oil feed setup - line size, restricted or not and size, as if you are running factory oil pressure ratings...I have a 6265 jb myself, and have been given conflicting information from the manufacturer and their vendor in regards to oil delivery. Thanks.

Cant really help what comes with a kit, all you can do is upgrade, which is what many - most - all of the esmeril kit users were doing prier to the kit being offered with a quality turbo.

I to will be curious about the oil info that you have requested.

I would start with a -4an with a .085 and move down from there if you are having issues. What are they telling you?

If the turbo is ebay I would be scared about the rest of the setup.

Mainly i bought the kit because of the turbo placement, upgrade capabilities, and i got a good deal on a kit that was barely even used. When i purchased the kit i planned on upgrading the turbo. I have also upgraded the wastegate and its running a microtech ems.

If one was not planning to upgrade when buying the esmeril kit then it would have not been a good choice. However, now there has been many upgrades when purchasing the kit new. No large upgraded neaded now.

See BigTurbo74 comment. I am using that line size. It has no restrictor. The turbo itself has a restrictor for oil. I am running factor oil pressure rating. I put over 1000 miles on the turbo now and no smoke.

Luckycat, you are correct that your line is -4AN but your turbo does have a restrictor. It is built into the oil inlet flange that we include with the kit.

Best regards,

Chris
