This will be the 1st 6 port thats ported and FI'ed?
Wish we could get a wet flow bench analysis on these ports (oem and ported) intake and exhaust.

I think that Ray is just being conservative when he says the porting does not yield very much. You will have a hard time convincing me that Erick's (and Ray's) work did not cause a significant gain in my engine's performance.
It was more than just a clean up porting job. The ports are larger than stock and have more duration. It just wasn't a radical port job.

nice setup Kane!

I blew my last motor from BHR coil misfires too.

the joys of forced induction, eh?

05rex8 Was that back before the dwell change?

Kane, do you recommend kgparts as a place to get my injectors upgraded?

They did me right; so yeah - I would recommend them. I have not however installed and tuned them yet - so I am not 100% sure the flow is accurate. But they were recommended by others here.

It's good to see that my old engine is finally going to have a test of the porting that Rick did...I wanted to do the 3071, but life intervened.

Shiv did an excellent job of making a custom one-off version of the Xceed for the RX-8. If I had not fiddled with his tune & race gas, then I probably would never have popped the engine!

What is the max theoretical WHP from a 3071 within it's efficiency band? I haven't been keeping up with the RX-8 tuning since I got my 335i (making nearly 400 WHP now).

I am curious if anyone is popping open the ports at lower RPMs to get more torque down low since with FI we don't have to worry about velocity.

And as all of you know, Ray is the man.

How about the idea that we have a LOT of F/I'd engines running our set up without any trouble?

Yeah, your problems must have been the coils.
whoa hold on a sec.
I pm'd you all of this. This happened before it was found out the dwell settings were needed to be changed. After I got back my kit after you repaired it, I was getting misfires like crazy--even worse. That's when my engine went. I removed my turbo kit after this so I could get a new engine. Then I reinstalled it. Now it works perfectly with the new dwell settings.

I am not looking for anything Ray, I never asked you to compensate for my engine. That's just the way it goes when playing with turbo's and rotaries. I understand this.

Yup. And nobody believed me. It's fine tho. I never made a big deal about it because Ray took care of me with the coil kit and I understand that this is all part of the fun with modifying cars.

That's fine Ray. I understand where you are coming from. I don't have a beef with you. I am not looking to make trouble. That's why I never made a big deal about it.

I know what happened. But I'm not going to sit here trying to convince you because it's pointless. My car is back on the road; better than ever. I'm happy.

man that engine looks amazing, i can tell mine is not to long from needing a rebuild, hell az is almost drivable in a day. must stay away from saving account agg.

ill attest the coils work great, my only issue was installer fault(*coughe* me *cough*), and a wire getting cut on a edge. but charles went way out of his way to help me, so he has any of my future business ^_^

Just to add my own .02 since people can read this thread and freak out - which is something I was afraid of.

Here are some highlights of "how to blow your motor with a misfire":
- You must be making a LOT of power; I don't think a factory Greddy can do it - somewhere around 330+ g/sec
- You MUST be at or about the torque peak; 330+ past the torque peak isn't gonna do it.
- You must get a misfire from the leading coil with the trailing firing....

All in all it is kinda like finding a needle in a haystack; I just happened to be that lucky; loaded 9-10 PSI on a larger turbo right at the torque peak; got like 2 misfire / detonation events and that was all she wrote; when it goes you will KNOW IT - there is no mistaking what happened. Now as to whether it was dwell or not; I have my opinions but Ray has not yet physically looked at the ignition - so who knows it may have been a wire... but I THINK it is dwell in my case; we shall see.

u sent me replacement wires (i sent back the old ones). that stupid engine bracket cut into the harness and grounded out one of the wires, i removed the spacers to tilt the coils and added tape to the cut , that fixed the misfire

engine was hot and didnt feel like trying to take off the engine hoist bracket

problem solved

No, you didn't.
It doesn't work that way.

Unless you actually had a mechanical failure with the coil kit (you didn't), under-dwell on the coil will not cause a catastrophic misfire/no-fire on the leading.

Got it; you have to hit all of those together; and like I said when it goes you know.

I wasn't saying that dwell didn't kill yours - I am just saying what all it takes.

There is no 100% rule that dwell killed mine; and honestly me and Ray may never agree; but we will see when he gets here.

Since you brought it up (and deleted it); but I'll answer the question since others may have it too. Why did Ray "believe me" and not others - well

A) He doesn't believe me 100% because he hasn't seen the coils yet; however we have worked together on numerous occasions and knows that I'm at least halfway decent at this stuff.

B) I have the logs man; I can prove it was ignition signal break-up - timing and AFR's are fine etc...just luck of the draw that I was logging.

This is one of the upsides to my "change one thing at a time rule" - I know when the car ran perfect and I know exactly when it started to have problems - so that helps with diagnosis too.

But at the end of the day - I'll have to have Ray look at my ignition - and then reinstall in new engine as is with just dwell changes before I can prove it was Dwell and not some other misfire related issue.
