How do you know when your engine is blown?
My turbo has been dying for a few months now so I barely ever drive it. When I do drive I granny shift and never go into boost.
Today I was forced to get on it hard and got into boost for a few seconds and imediately when I came to a red light my idle was going up/down like crazy and my exhaust system started smoking.
Do I need an engine rebuild or did my turbo just kick the bucket?

Is your coolant level going down or are you constantly adding coolant?
If so, it could be that a rubber seal or seals between the housings are leaking due to a bad episode(s) of overheating.
One way to check is to let the car sit overnight and take a look at the plugs in the next day. Compare the front leading to the rear. If you notice water/condensation then that is a good sign that your engine seals are bad.

It's common for the greddy turbo to smoke. It will happen usually when idling at traffic lights.
If so, just keep an eye on it, if it happens more frequently, you'll want to pull it and rebuild or replace it.
Bouncing idle could be any number of things. Your sig doesn't mention fuel management, so I can't comment further. From what you've said, none of it sounds like a big deal.
