In '04, they're pretty different. The Auto has 4 ports while the manual is 6. It comes stock with 190hp vs. 235hp from the manual and a number of standard engine mods don't work on the a/t. Sometime later... '06 maybe? The auto switched to be a detuned 6 port with 212hp, not sure when that was.
Anyways, the AT isn't some fancy electronic clutch like an Audi, it's still got a torque converter. I bought my 8 brand new with very little experience driving stick and by the end of the first month I was fine. Get a friend with a stick car to take you to a parking lot and teach you all of the basics and buy an MT instead, you won't regret it. If you get an AT, you're basically always going to regret it.

thanks for the info.... i have an manual rx8, i just need another engine and the rear quartar panels off of it and other.... im lookin to buy an rx8 from coparts and now i know not to buy an auto one.
