FI RX8 in NZ

Here are a few pics of my FI project RX8 down here in New Zealand.

This recently featured in a local car mag and they kindy sent me some of the photos. Further to that, there were some mistakes in the write up which I can seek to clarify here (I referenced this website in the thankyou section of the feature).

Specs:

2003 RX8 4 port, 5 speed manual Jap domestic model (imported to nz 2004)
Garrett GT30/40 roller bearing turbo.
Custom exhaust manifold (RE Sinclair)
Custom CF airbox (made by me)
Custom Front Mount IC
440cc primary and 550cc secondary injectors
Microtech ECU with some custom software (extra map for additional intake injector for later on.....)
Stock engine internals
Stock Clutch
Stock mufflers, custom 3" exhaust (no CAT etc)
Lowered springs and 18x5.5 DTM rims (225/40R18)
Relocated battery and new relocated washer res.

ABS, DSC and fly-by-wire throttle intact, but I do have a stubborn CEL.

Was running around 4PSI as a warmup to bigger things.

Stock it Dynoed *i think from memory* about 140 whp, on 4PSI about 205 whp.
(The % increase is the important part for me, not the ultimate peak number)

We are right this minute tuning for 8PSI. Will update figures when that is done.
I should also be able to post the charts later if anyone wants to see em.

That's probably one of the nicest intakes I've ever seen on a turbo RX-8. Clean and to the point. The auto guys here will be interested in your car as the only 4 port we have is with the auto tranny. Nice work.

Umm, around 6 months. The major hangup was the ECU part, Mazfix Australia pissed me around for several of those months....

Cheers. The idea was to retain and much of the standard box and filter assembly as possible. The guy fabricating the install put the turbo where he wanted it and I made up something to bridge the gap. You will see the stock air flow meter stuck in the side of it....that was before we figured out we were'nt gonna need it.

I wondered how you would get on with microtech as no-one on here has tried it other than the Interceptor x which I believe is a specially modded Microtech .

Love the intake, just one question though:
Does a strut bar not fit? or does the 4 port not come with one?

Car has been running great. Travelled approx 5000km over 4 months with the FI setup (4psi).
Initial problems were mainly heat related, in particular in the engine bay. We solved this by hooking both fans to the microtech and kicking them in much earlier along with fitting a turbo beanie.

We almost finished tuning the car yesterday for 8psi which looks to have yeilded about 250whp peak with an extra 30whp more than 4psi in the midrange..which is really nice. The stock clutch is coping at the moment which saves me another job in the meantime.

Thanks for the comments on the intake guys, it was a lot of work but the result was worth it. Of course I have the mold sitting in my workshop and would be happy to punch out one or two.....

I'd love to see what you can get with it. There are many people here that have no confidence in the 4 port engine but I personally think it has much more in it than most think it does. I don't see any reason why you couldn't get 300 rwhp out of it. Considering the Greddy turbo has been tuned to 300 hp by a few people and it doesn't have enough flow to justify leaving the auxiliary ports working, I don't see what the issue is. The 4 port engine has more intake area than the 6 port does when it's auxiliary ports are closed. 300 should be no issue at all and most likely much higher. The ports are easily as large as the last 4 port 13B ports were.

Haha, yes it can be fiddly as you can't hide a poor weave layup with gelcoat.

300whp would be the ultimate goal and I am getting closer now. Power output is being measured on a dynojet which down here are well known for reading low numbers, I could take the car down the road and prolly see bigger numbers come up on their dyno. For instance, my batty measured 308whp or so on the dynojet but ~345whp on other dynos

I gotta say even on only 4psi the whole car was transformed and became a lot more fun to drive...which is what its all about.

Here is a dyno sheet following todays tuning.

Also I must apologize, I've been calling the dyno a dynojet......quite clearly its not

The posted pull is in 5th gear and you are seeing the 180kph limit cut. If we could figure out a way to get rid of this without losing the DSC etc then we will do a pull in 5th all the way thru. Car prolly makes more power than posted as in third gear its smooth right thru...but I have no plot to back that statement up.

if you pull out the side boot linings you can get to the wheel sensor connectors . Just disconnect them for your dyno run and you will be sweet .
Have driven on track with these disconnected . You lose DSC ABS & power steering defaults to light setting . Car is drivable but I flat spotted a trye at Pukekohe doing this so not recommended.
