My Guess why Chris picked that is to keep the turbo well within the efficencey of the turbo (low air temp), fast spool up for a big turbo but still large enough to flow up top and I also have a .96 to play with to. The flow characteristics of the Renni vs the older 13B are different so they don't flow the same. I will tell you chris said this has the minimum requirments that Rx7 guys would use, like a first time turbo swap.

Good point .

The RX-8 doesn't really flow as easily as normal 13bs because the gasses abruptly hit a wall and exit at 90deg from the direction of flow, port open duration is also very short compared to previous engines even thought the total port area is larger. Still, your point is very true and there is a good explanation for that:
My 500whp+ set up actually had that turbo with the Q-trim but I was running a .96 A/R not a .68 which means I was using the full extent of the Qtrim wheel without having to go to a overly large A/R. Surprisingly the .96 Q-trim actually spooled faster than a previous trial I did using a P-trim with a 1.15A/R. My car was also halfbridge ported and when I sold the kit to SSSpeedfreak I also sent him an extra Q-trim .68 housing I had laying around in case he though the .96 was too laggy with his stock port engine. That Q-trim wheel with the .68A/R should behave similar to a P-trim wheel with a .84A/R which is a common selection for stock port 13b's. If and whenever he decides to rebuild it with our seals he will likely get it ported as well at which point the .96 will probably be of interest.

Best regards,
Chris

Those are good points. Part of the difference is that you have 3 exhaust ports so a twin scroll manifold is not usable for increased efficiency. Mazda used a twin scroll manifold on the single turbo 89-91 Rx-7's.

Exactly, and twin scroll turbos spool slower than open volute when mounted on open volute manifolds due to the turbulence formed in the abrupt transition. I did think about dividing the center port which is split between the front and rear rotor so that I could isolate one rotor from the other one and have a 4 runner exhaust manifold where the two from the center are way smaller than the front and rear ones. In the end it would have taken very small tubing for the center runners with a lot of shaping and very sharp bends for a marginal improvement. Space proved to be a problem also. In the end I decided to make a collector style manifold to use the open volute to the best of its ability and called it a day. It worked fine and was not horribly hard to make.

Hey Chris.

It won't hinder performance like you think. if you have a 1.00 divided, it flows like a .81 undivided. A 1.15 divided flows identicle to a .96. Turbulence is the renesis exhaust port :D.

Yes, it's an RX-8 RENESIS ENGINE, not an RX-7 13B

open your mind, let go of the past culture ....

So is it possible to just buy all of the components for the Esmeril Kit except the turbo and just have one of these built and bolt it right into the kit? And if so would the price be relatively the same as the kit with the turbo that is currently packaged with it? I ask because I am in the market to get a kit but after reading quite a bit about the Esmeril Kit, I was really turned off by lag of the turbo that comes with it. Would love to see some video and dyno numbers from this upgrade!!

I wish it wasn't matte black (if that's what it is). A solid bright color would actually make it less ricey to me. Matte black is overplayed on a lot of cars now =\

It looks very functional for what I need. If not I will have to do some cutting on mine and this way looks cleaner and cheaper in the end.

I like it, it's not my personal style and I make fun of him about his doors every time I had to climb in - LOL. But it sure is a clean build!

And I like the matte black, not many rx8's with it, and now he has the turbo to back up the look.
