Track Review

Also I just spoke with Chris,

FAQ:

1) The turbo has an oil restrictor bolted into the turbo side of the oil feed line so it always receives the correct flow.
2) Target for base tune is at least 11.0:1 if not richer.
3) I recommend using Lucas Fuel Additive with this turbo kit. Its a cheap easy to find additive that can help lube your engine. You should be using a dedicated two stroke like Idemitsu for hardcore track usage.

Woah, the manifold is so solid...

Come on! You gotta give him at least a couple of days before he posts a dyno. Its taken me about 2 months to install a turbo kit in my garage.

staticlag 02-20-2008 02:00 PM

Lol, and its like 8 degrees here and I don't have heat for my garage.

We can't all live in lucious florida damn you!

Jedi54 02-20-2008 02:18 PM

go to walmart and buy one of those portable heating fans. Problem solved. :)

HiTMaNN 02-20-2008 02:37 PM

Get 4 of these in your garage and you will never want to leave.

tdiddy 02-20-2008 02:42 PM

I feel your pain Static. Its been pretty cold here also.

I have been using a propane tank heater. Its nice because I can turn it on whenever I want and it heats the garage up in about 15 min.

TopGear8 02-20-2008 04:32 PM

Well it's almost been 24 hours! Where are the pics?!?

My son wore a jacket to school today. It's 68 F outside. That's damn chilly for Floridians. I say it's comparable to a northerner at 35 F!

ahhhhhh, i can't wait til i get mine... but too bad mine is going straight to my shop... i wouldn't kno wuts wut and probably lose a few small pieces lol. anyways, it looks great! are you planning to do the install all alone? Also when do you plan on starting or is it all weather pending.

lastly, what ignition coils/plugs are you using?

The install is going to be weather dependent. I'm planning on using 4 OEM trailing plugs with the spacers removed for use in the leading position. Stock coils for now.

I'm shooting for next weekend if we hit a streak of 40 degree days and the snow melts from around here.

rotorocks 02-20-2008 08:23 PM

oy, just like mine cept for the manifold :)
Congrats, and best of luck!

ShAdOwFoX 02-20-2008 09:04 PM

awesome keep us updated! Quick question: is the turbo located on the intake manifold or front mounted?

The turbo mounts in the engine bay where the stock battery box is. It attaches to the exhaust manifold as well as it is one piece construction from the engine flange piped up to the turbo. No weak mandrel bend piping on the manifold either, only heavy duty cast stainless steel, it is as solid as if the turbo were bolted directly to the engine.

NgoRX8 02-20-2008 09:21 PM

It is solid as a tank.

First thing I noticed was how beefy the manifold was.

ivory8 02-20-2008 11:40 PM

im a noob and im not sure how this 1 compares to the other turbos, but IT SURE IS SHINY! lol can't wait to see it on your car =)

Mazsport's turbo is a T4 as per their site. From the pics I can guess the intake to the compressor section is 3", ours is the equivalent of a GT35 and has a 4" intake on the compressor. So I guess it is safe to say that ours is bigger. This is of course from pictures and text from the Mazsport site, I have no concrete specs of their components.

truemagellen 02-22-2008 01:29 AM

A color, zoom-able pdf copy of the install guide is provided to every customer along with a hard copy. The install sections are step by step with photos, including great detail on installing the upgraded fuel pump that comes with the kit (the most difficult section).

After you install the kit once or twice you can do it off memory it is seriously that easy. I'm the only non-engineer involved with Esmeril Racing and even I can install it off memory now...which if you ask the local RX-8 guys is amazing :lol2:

I think a DIY install guide still is much needed as you can see how one of customers tackles the install, besides Static's previous DIYs are outstanding so we are happy to update the included guide based off customer's recommendations and experiences.

Besides our guide doesn't include pictures of our toes which are the key to a successfully install guide ;)

sms-fab 02-22-2008 09:31 AM

Sorry if this comes off wrong, Im new to the site(and this turbo kit), Are the components shown (wastegate and Turbo) part of the ebay community?(not garrett or turbonetics?)

Speedrx8er 02-22-2008 09:38 AM

It is truly very easy to install and by far less difficult then the Greddy.
Truemagellen is right, the fuel pump will be the most difficult. Because that darn cap is so hard to loosen. Other then that everything fits like Legos :).

That's been a debate. They say no, but won't say where they do get them from. Until proven otherwise assume Yes.

Somewhere in here is your answer.

It doesn't come off wrong at all, it's a very good question.

Garret nor turbonetics make a wastegate like that(HKS does). And no they are not from Ebay. Although you might be able to find components that look similar on ebay, they are different upon closer inspection. The diagphram of the wastegates is lower quality and will crack after use, the material used for the casting of the wastegate chamber rusts with use(not really good stainless) and the turbocharger will only last about 2-3 months because they use a smaller thrust bearing made of bronze instead of the real deal which is a better quality alloy. Our components were sourced from the actual factory that makes the wastegate for HKS(can't mention names, but HKS doesn't do their own parts, they out-source them) and the turbos are sourced from the manufacturer that casts and machines turbonetics' components(they are of course not allowed to say this for legal purposes either). Lets just say that "Brands" don't actually have people in "brand" factories making parts, they out-source them, they just demand a more stringent quality control as opossed to ebay parts which don't and this makes them more expensive., other than that they are the same parts. Our turbo and wastegate combo was tested for almost two years(and still going) on a real daily driven car(about 15,000 miles a year) to verify their reliability. No rebuild has been necessary, the turbo doenst cause smoking and the wastegate hasn't missed a beat.

We visited the manufacturing houses(a very long flight...can't say more) to verify that the components/materials/alloys being used were the correct ones and met our standards. I am a mechanical engineer and posses a lot of experience in metallurgy, casting and machining processes(its what I do) and verified all this myself. Simply put, if you keep searching deeper and deeper into a product you will eventually get to an actual factory that is actually melting the metal to create parts, this is very rarely the brand that sells the parts. Hope this answer's your question.

Chris

p.s.This was discussed in our original "Esmeril Turbo kit released" thread....you can go there and read through it to see the discussion. This thread is a review/DIY of a customer's kit so lets keep it on topic... ;)

There is a reason why we don't mention the actual source. We don't wish to cause a legal battle between our source and the brands. Let's see if I can explain this better: Lets say you bake cakes for DQ and you get really good at it and you decided to start making cakes on your own. You don't want to loose your original customer(DQ) so you ask people that buy cakes from you to be quiet about it so DQ doesn't get upset. Its not breaking any laws as you are allowed to do this but you still don't want the tension. Hope this explains it better. Now lets get back on topic, this is not a thread about the kit and its components, there is a thread for that, this is a DIY guide/review.

:)

Chris
