I think it'll be a bit low to the ground.

mhmm i thought of this too but.... i'm at stock height ad dont plan on lowering much if at all. also a shorter turn down style tip n the same location is another option.

Such a short pipe wouldn't leave any room for the mufflers that are required for the rotary engine.

If you go oval pipe and stay at stock ride height you could pull it off, but it will still hit/scrap/drag/bounce/vibrate/rattle off everything and whenever you drive. And not much room for a muffler, unless you put one in the midpipe...

thanks i appreciate the responses. the idea i had planned would start with a muffler in the midpipe position. other then clearance issues are there ne other main issues to look into. if heat was a problem at all i suppose i could coat everything lol

I think itll be ok. Its a cool idea and one that ive had myself aswell. Besides, who wants a lot of muffler anyway. Have you heard the car unmuffled. Its better/meaner then any exhaust you can buy, tho it is a little loud

You would need mufflers for the rotary engine?? I've thought about doing a electronic cut out right after the cat- Would that hurt the motor?? Just wondering before I do it...

You dont NEED mufflers , its just to lower the ridiculously loud exhaust sounds from the rotary engine. Also it could be raspy.

i would definatley still go with a muffler it just wouldnt be that big. i still think it would be a lil on the loud side and think i mite go with an apexi ecv if i were to do it... also i think a long flat tip would look sick and help with clearance issues.

any other issues anyone can come up with?

With a small 'universal' muffler, it would just sound nasty, like a crackly leafblower......

well not just any universal muffler, but a muffler i decide on that will sound good, to fit into the system

does anyone know if an agency power muffler can be bought on its own, not as a part of a cat-back?

While on the idea of a universal muffler.... What would you go with? I've seen it mentioned here once or twice before, that the exhaust coming out of the Renny is quite hot, and a high-temp muffler would be needed. I don't know how true this is.. but what are your thoughts?

i have been under the car.. you could run the exhaust all the way to the back where there is room for a muffler. then run it forward and find some thin oval tubing then exit it out the side, but you will be replacing the side exit tubing a lot..

it can be done. it just is not feasable.

about the muffler, if i were to end up trying this idea i would most likely try and go with a muffler from a company that has rotary products.

swoope. ino ive been under my car too, it is tight. but. i plan on basically replacing the cat with a muffler. why do u think the side exhaust tubing would need to be replaced alot?

and for the tip it would be something rectangular about 1 1/2" x 6". i think that would look unique and give good ground clearance

ground clearance at the side of the car. what about from the center to the side.

so your idea is the from the header you are going to put in a muffler and then run it out the side?

if that is it you have no idea how loud it will be..

good luck with this project, please try it and post pics.

Oh good. So it's finally happened. The RX8Club technical forums have become as negative and absurd as the RX7Club technical forums.

BTW, Feasible usually means capable of being done, effected, or accomplished. Or, Possible. While you may have intended it's use with an alternative definition doing so is about as absurd as you seem to think the side exit exhaust is. I think the word you were really looking for is "plausible." However, even this would be an absurd assertion. Just ahead of the rear wheels, where the aero flares would be, there is plenty of ground clearance for this, assuming you either pipe the exhaust through the aero-flares, or don't have aero-flares to worry about.

only thing that has been asked by the op is opinion, and if it has been done.

not really sure where you are going with this..

I have built and run custom side exit systems on other cars (last one was a BMW Z4 comp car if you can believe that) and I would strongly recommend not doing it because I won't ever again myself, on an RX-8 it will be too loud and too little clearance even with oval pipes or a flat diffuser, either dump it under the car with a downturn or pipe it out the back

Sorry, just commenting on the growing negativity in which folks seem hell bent on being very negative and discouraging. Granted, this idea seems a bit far-fetched, but "a stupid idea that will never work on a street RX-8" just seems to go a bit too far. Ehhh, I'm probably just over-reacting, though.
