yep,

rock and a hard place. car under cover or fwd! easing back into this.. car under cover has a front seal leak.. causes missfires on track. not that you dont know that. :)

interesting how much and little this place has changed!!!

have to search for what the brett port is..

and figure out if all the seals you used are stock.

Tuning with Mazdaedit . Having big hassles with it right now actually . Hope it will get resolved .....

^^ Some where in the neighborhood of 5250?

Brettus 01-12-2013 02:02 PM

Major problem - Found out last night that my ECU has reached it's flash limit of 100 .
With protuner there was something in the software that prevented this from happening . It seems Mazdaedit didn't have anything similar .

So can't tune it AT ALL at the moment and there isn't an easy solution.

Good news is that the old tune in there is ok except for idle speed which i had at 1000 and is too fast . Getting vibration from motor mounts at that rpm.

Mazdaedit is suggesting I get hold of a "piassini" dealer to fix ECU . I know Cobb could do it but doubt they would help someone using a different program than theirs .

ShellDude 01-12-2013 04:10 PM

That sounds like a major flaw. Is he going to do more than just redirect you to someone else?

Brettus 01-12-2013 04:24 PM

/\ that was his suggestion - will see if he is prepared to sort his program so this doesn't happen again.

HiFlite999 01-12-2013 05:19 PM

Does the Cobb also run into this limit of 100 flashes?

Pretty sure Cobb has it covered in their software .

TeamRX8 01-12-2013 09:00 PM

your info is a bit off, this is back from 2006 before it was released (they had my RX8 for beta testing then, the modified one that is mentioned):

The 100 flash limit is simply the minimum guaranteed reflash spec according to the chip manufacturer. Yes, we've flashed more than that successfully but the number wasn't just grabbed out of the air. It's in the Technical Hardware documentation from the chip manufacturer. Gotta assume they know best.

Progress has been good. Christian and Billy have spent the past several days with our RX-8 on one of the dynos extracting decent power from a bone stock 2005 6MT. Next we'll put on a modified RX-8 that's been loaned to us in order to build our tuning database.

Are you FI guys running stock injectors or modified injectors? If modified, what bank are you modifying?

Otherwise, things are going good. Still plan on making an announcement at SEMA (end of Oct) with more details regarding planned availability, price, et cetera and we'll of course post any releases here as well.

Thanks,
Trey @ COBB

Plenty of us have greatly exceeded the 100 flash *theoretical* limit, which is really just a guaranteed minimum number by the chip manufacturer, I wouldn't be surprised if MM has exceeded 1000 even ...

.

.

Tell that to the Mazdaedit guy who read it straight off my hex. file . He told me 100 flashes is an actual limit and this is why i can't load a tune now.
Hymee had the exact same issue till he resolved it .

Dunno how Cobb get around it - but they do somehow .....

I bet you feel like a cursed man at the moment? Sorry Brett, surprises like this are very frustrating.

Frustrated ? Yes .
Cursed ? Nah man - comes with the territory with these engines.

olddragger 01-12-2013 09:33 PM

I was meaning to ask earlier--was there a reason that you went back to the oem flywheel? I have been thinking of doing the same thing?

Brettus 01-12-2013 09:42 PM

/\ Absolutely there was a good reason !

LW flywheel had the following issues for me :
*jerky in gear takeoff from slow speed
*Finicky low and medium throttle take off from the lights
These factors made worse by using upgraded clutch - which i did keep installed BTW.
I really only noticed how bad my car was in this regard after driving a few stock 8s again and realising how much more civilised they were.

I thought hard about it and realised the whole benefit with a LW fly (apart from heel toe downshift on the track) was in gears 1 and 2 . In higher gears the benefit is negligible .

So why have something that boosts accel in 1st and 2nd when the only limiting factors (in a powerful FI'd car) are how much boost you run and how much traction you can get in your tyres .

So apart from some minor benefits at the track I don't see it being worthwhile in an FI'd car.

ShellDude 01-12-2013 10:22 PM

Have you tried flashing an AP or PT map with the hope it might reset the counter?

TeamRX8 01-12-2013 10:35 PM

apparently some of the work Cobb completed is not so easily copied ...

yep - tried that several times - no dice

TeamRX8 01-12-2013 11:12 PM

you might want to let the wirdy bird know before he gets caught out by the same thing

Brettus 01-14-2013 09:35 PM

7 psi .... :)

Slidin8 01-14-2013 10:52 PM

Brett, don't be a tease

Brettus 01-14-2013 11:11 PM

heh - nothing much more to report sorry . Taking it on a road trip tomorrow to get some kms on her . After that i can do some more logs etc

Totally agree. It is a pain in heavy traffic. I also have to rev a to at least 2500 rpm to take off from the lights. the drivers around me think I am about to race them. the loud exhaust does not help either.
