Nice work, did you grind those seals yourself? Glad to see you are almost done.

Looking forward to live online tuning session Brett has promised.

LOL Ok ... he didn't

Looks awesome Brett

looking forward to this thread. I am a little surprised you went with the 5 speed. I would have thought that the s2 trans and a 4:77 diff would have been used. See how much I know?

Thanks for keeping us updated, interested to see final results.

i just feel like you could take advantage of the boost with the 5speed. care to enlighten me on why you think he s2trans and 4.77 diff would be better?

good luck Brett.
Thanks Chris

No internal engine work for me ...no

S2 trans Practically unprocurable in NZ . Besides, I think 6 speeds is too many when you have all that torque/power on tap.

Cheers

Looking forward to seeing if your magical Brettspeed centre port runner works

olddragger 01-03-2013 09:35 AM

I do love my 6th gear for the interstate cruising! But certainly understand your position and in that case the 5 speed makes good sense.
For 350 rwhp I thought you would need more injector flow than yellows and blues would give?
Are any of them un capped?
Really looking forward in seeing what kind of exhaust setup you end up with also.
Are you going to be doing any oil passageway/regulator work? Any oil pump work?
I know yall have cool temps where you live ( beautiful country!) but any waterjacket work to be done?
Cam ( Pettit racing) swears by increasing the coolant flow around the sparkplugs. I actually have a "freezeplug" looking plug between the lead/trailing sparkplugs where he accessed the coolant jackets and did his work on increasing the coolant flow in that area. I thought I would share that with you just in case you may be interested in doing the same.
At this power level are you still planning on using the oem ignition coils?

I have a feeling this will be a long and informative thread.

The 5th in the 5 speed is taller than 6th so i can see it being better for cruiseing . All the other gears are taller - which i think will be a good thing as well .

I did my 333 dyno on red yellow blue which i know was close to the wind . I'm actually thinking I'll get more power for less air flow this time so should have just enough for 350 on yellow/yellow/blue.

Nothing unusual in the exhaust setup . Will be fixing up my Trust Ti setup and putting that back on along with the stock 'gutted' midpipe . No changes to the oil pressure at this stage . Although I might change my mind once my old engine is opened up and I can see how the bearings have fared . My engine builder was against increasing the pressure saying it generates more heat in the oil.

Too late for any of that ! Might be ordering the Mazmart pump which should help .
Do you have that OD ?

Nope - I have had D585s on for about a year now.

Darkness8 01-03-2013 02:11 PM

9krpmrx8 01-03-2013 03:18 PM

Will you be posting pics of the old engine once torn down?

If there is anything of interest ... sure

9krpmrx8 01-03-2013 03:38 PM

Cool, I have yet to see a boosted one with this many miles torn down.

olddragger 01-03-2013 04:16 PM

Yep I do have that cooling jacket mod Bret. Cam told me it prevents the housing cracks around the sparkplugs that are sometimes seen.

Sorry I didnt realize you had the d 585's.....

You may want to ditch the oem midpipe--gutted or not. I think you will find that there is an advantage to a true 3 inch exhaust and one with straighter angles.
I will pM you.

finally, a thread worthy of this forum area

This!

And no Isuzu V6's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brettus 01-04-2013 01:26 PM

Found a crack in the Greddy manifold INSIDE it on the wall for the siamese port . Could delay things a bit getting this welded up .

JIN13 01-04-2013 01:50 PM

Sucks about the manifold, good luck sounds like a promising set-up

Or just get a tubular manifold made ;)

Haha fair enough mate

Slightly off topic, but since you track your 8, what is you wheel, tyre and suspension set up?

If you don't mind me asking

FazdaRX_8 01-04-2013 03:15 PM

Good luck with the new build, look forward to seeing progress, and the tear down of the old engine, they may be a whole other thread though!

I didn't know JDM had 5 speed rx8 trannys, is it really a rx7 tranny?
