Blackenedwings Franken-turbo install thread
The trims aren't so much messed up as it just isn't responding properly to the maps. He was taking out mass amounts of fuel in 4th-6th and it just wasn't leaning out. He was adding huge amounts of fuel to 2nd to fix a lean patch that showed up and it just got worse. We even reverted to the original map I was running in the morning that was great 1st-3rd, and that wasn't right either. Something is changing physically and its not reacting to tuning the way it should. The MAF setup wasn't done quite right at the shop, and I have everything I need to fix it, I just need to take the front bumper off and cut a pipe. Jeff showed me what I have to do, I just need to find the time to do it, and then revert to a base map (with my injector scaling) and try and get it sorted.
Well, it isn't a complete wash... Jeff is going to take the base map with rescaled injectors and the map we dyno tuned and continued street tuning and try to use the delta's to sort out a final map. It's not as nice as just plopping it on the dyno and getting a final tune, but we have literally 40 iterations on the tune so far and the last 5+ hrs of street tuning ended up even farther off than this morning. I'm going to swap back to the earlier tune for now, and try to fix the MAF setup tomorrow.
Ok, well I had to revert to the tune I was running this morning until I can redo the MAF piping. The earlier tune is at least safe in boost in 1st-3rd and is pig rich in boost for 4th-6th. The newer tune was scary lean in 1st and 2nd gear. I was seeing some scary numbers that made me really glad I'm spraying meth in boost. No detonation, but I'm going to avoid that tune for the moment.
Is there any chance there is moisture on the maf ?
Any moisture on the maf whatsoever will screw you over big time in boost .

Well, one thing I noticed is that PFS removed the filter sock from the AEM intake cone, so that certainly didn't do the intake setup any favors. Also the MAF sensor is like 3-4 inches from the kink where the diameter changes which is way too close. They also removed the screens, so there were no screens in the setup. Jeff and I threw a screen in at the kink, but it wasn't with one of the couplers with the step designed to hold it in place, so I think the screen is moving causing turbulence that is making it impossible to tune. I'm going to cut the bendy pipe shorter, moving the diameter change coupler away from the MAF sensor, and add the proper coupler with the screen step as well as replacing the sock on the intake cone. Hopefully those changes will clean up the car. The good news is that reverting to the older tune allows the car to be driven fine in boost 1st through 3rd, so I can take the car in to work today. Even the higher gears are safe, they are just too rich to make it into boost without stumbling like crazy.
hah, i am jealous of u having mm able to tune yours in person and help u trouble shoot. Cant wait till he completes my turbo, all i have left is purchase of new couplers and water meth.
the filter sock wouldn't hurt anything would it? just helps in preventing it sucking up some moisture

Damn. 300RWHP congrats man. I picked my car up the night before you got yours out of there and have to say I was amazed that yours was still there. Sucks. I gottat tell you that as for me and my build everything tune wise was fine but of all things the Damn turbo I got was totally FUCKED. It was leaking oil during the install and PFS told me about it and took pictures to show me. they went forward on the build and tested it on the dyno to see if it was going to hold at all and NO couldn't even get the dam thing above 7psi and once it hit at like 5k it couldn't even hold at 7psi it pissed away pressure and needless to say after several runs the car didn't even make it one day with it on. Maxed out at 260RWHP 7psi and smoke puring out the exhaust from oil seal in the turbo giving out. Now I have to stop pinching pennies and purchase a brand new turbo. Luckily Ray is working with me to get a proper sizing and from a repritable dealer at a great price. I will let you and everyone know once it is running how it works out. Enjoy and C U soon as it is ready
Yeah, the chinese knockoff T-70 in the original Esmeril kit is truly horrible. I was actually in the shop when you called on Friday so Ray gave me the heads up on the situation with the turbo. I was there for 14 hours that day. If you are getting an upgraded turbo, make sure you upgrade the wastegate as well if you have the old style Esmeril WG as it is in a very dangerous spot. They have a new Tial low-profile one that gives better clearance in the new kit. My battery was dead after 2 months sitting at PFS and died on the way to work so I got a new battery today. Not sure when I'm going to have a chance to monkey with my MAF setup, it might have to wait until this weekend unless I'm able to get out early one of these days.
Awesome pic! That's my new background. My battery died while sitting for 2 months at PFS, so I had to get a jump today and drive to Advanced Auto to replace it. Also, the car was running like **** today, the MAF is definitely all over the place. It was pig rich in idle today so it kept stalling. Then while trying to keep it from stalling I backed over a curb and tore off the rear aero flare on the passenger side. *growl*
Also the weather just started pouring rain and thunderstorms and looks to be this way for a few days so I probably will not be able to pull the bumper off and screw with the intake until the weekend. Back to the Geo Prism bleh. It's going to take me a while to get the car dialed in I guess, but its a shame I only got a few days of boost joy before having to put the car on the bench. The things we do for boost.

Bro do me a favor I am kinda being lazy and what not but if you know where I could find the info on that Low profile wastegate let me know. I don't think it is sold seperately through esmeril and honestly I would be too apprehensive about buying it from them after seeing the damn turbo they offered but that wastegate is something of a fright to see at times and would love to shorten that up some. Let me know. Oh also what are you running for ignition. I am running colder plugs but stock coils. I need to figure what would be good as an upgrade. wondering let me know man

They are still selling the new kit with the Chinese knock-off T-70 turbo, but they now offer an option for a turbo that won't fall to pieces and blow up your car, so thats nice. You could check the Turbo Efficiency thread for some suggestions on a good option for a top mount turbo to replace the dead Chinese one.
I'm running the BHR Ignition Upgrade with FD RX-7 plugs leading and stock RX-8 plugs trailing as I recall. Dwell settings are set to 5ms. The BHR upgrade is awesome, I noticed a huge difference with the car even naturally aspirated. I'm planning to push my boost significantly once I have the wastegate spring tightened up and my MAF issues sorted out, so I expect the stronger ignition will be even more useful in the future.
Glad to see your car is done! I've been watching this thread from the start. You hit the bars in Columbia ever? I have one I go to there since my friend is a bartender. Send me a PM maybe we can get a beer and you can show\talk all about your turbo while I beg for a ride.
With all this said and done do you think PFSupercars is more educated on what to do with this turbo\and engine-management combo? Would turn into another disaster if I gave them my 8?
I live right in Frederick. I guess I could always fly MM out too if everything went to hell. Haha...
