9krpmrx8's Boost Build Thread
before this gets messy... Dude, you jumped into someones build thread and started asking questions that aren't the easiest to answer (without enticing other questions).
go to the "Major hosepower upgrades" section of the forums and read the stickies. You'll get your answers there

he thought that was being a dick
He is in for a load of fun. No offense Patrick but if you wanna learn, then just read. The info here can be a bit overwhelming (especially turbo stuff) but you just have to read through all the crap to get the good stuff. Asking questions and just expecting people to give you the right answers will get you no where.
For water cooling I am thinking a secondary radiator in one of the factory cooler locations is needed to assist the Koyo (no better than stock really). I have already sourced a unit that should fit in the factory oil cooler location that has a Spal fan on it. The fan will reduce flow through it at speed but overall it should reduce water temps enough. I also plan on replacing my aging factory fans and shroud just to start fresh there. Funny enough on our canyon run on Saturday in 90F weather, one of the guys with the Mazmart water pump and thermostat had significantly higher water temps than me

Now that I think about it I will do the V mount for the intercooler.

I think a big part of the problems people are seeing with there temps is an improperly sealed Rad.
9K I think I have seen that some people are have good results using the stronger 09+ fan motors. It may be something worth looking into. I still have no idea what I will be doing for cooling.

+1 on the "bout time" comment

I am pretty set on a secondary radiator. Grungepup also had a good idea about modifying the crash bar to move the oil cooler back and mounting the inter-cooler in front of it. So I need to find a crash bar I can play with and see what we can come up with.
Moving the bar back won't help. I would move it forward and up, or more accurately, make it smaller so it blocks less airflow. Of course you will need a modified grill or aftermarket bumper too.
Btw, ditch the fan for the secondary radiator. You will want optimum air flow at speed not at idle. Plus it greatly reduces the thickness of the cooler you can install. With the small bumper openings on the stock bumper, you will want the thickest cooler you can fit. Probably 3" depending on the fitting location.

Yeah there is quite a bit of room in the factory oil cooler locations. The fan will reduce airflow at high speeds but at low speeds under high RPM (when coolant temp is really an issue for me) it will cool better with the Spal. I can always test it.

Okay so Majestic Turbo says they can "upgrade" the T1618Z to make it more reliable, adding water cooling, etc. I am wondering if going with a better turbo is even worth it for the power level I am seeking. I trust these guys they have done two rebuilds for me previously. I am awaiting some more specific details.

Back in the day when I had my Turbonetics T3 rebuilt they were highly recommended and I was actually surprised when I learned they were in Waco of all places. My bosses brother owns the largest diesel repair business in the Dominican Republic and they have bought and dealt with them on turbo balancing equipment. Small world.

Yeah I have not heard any bad things about them and I searched a bit. I do remember their names in some magazines from back in the day. I guess we will wait and see what they say.

Check with fellow board member "darnellm" about the crash bar, I'm sure it was his car I recall had some interesting things done in the nose for improved cooling.

Re the crash bar : FYI - JDM models have a smaller one . One member from the States actually bought one in for the same reasons you are wanting to change yours.

Build your own bar, its a metal bar with a plate. Easy and cheap for any fabricator to make and you can build it to fit your custom needs. You will need a metal buy to build you brackets for the coolers anyways.
You think there is a lot of room for coolers in the oem location, but when you start trying to fit something in there it gets tight. Ditch the fan, you won't overheat at low speeds or low rpm. Try it if you want, but it makes better sense to run an inch thicker cooler then a fan.
Give me a few months and I will have my custom crash bar, maybe In the rear too.
If you give me specs (vs stock) of what you want, I will build one for you too.

for real, you can free up alot of room down there. I got everything mounted up as far as front mount goes. I will have to cut all the plastics away for the piping to the front mount and then its done up there. Until I decide to change the cooling parts

My father is heavy into offroading and has a lot of buddies who fab sliders, bumpers, etc. I am sure they can recreate the crash bar with mounts for my oil cooler and inter-cooler. I will have to find a crash bar from wrecked 8 and see what they can do with it.

Hmmm. I wonder just how much a bigger intercooler will really help at the power levels I am trying to hit. Do you think the bigger intercooler really helped?
