XM radio antenna placement
For anyone who has XM, where have you placed your antenna, and how have you routed it inside the car?
I've tried it at various points inside the car, but too many dropouts. Then I tried it on the rear hatch, centered left to right, adjacent to the window, with the wire routed inside over the gasket. Better but still too many dropouts. This morning I placed it on the roof, towards the rear of the car, with the wire running down the center of the rear window and inside the trunk over the gasket, and I'll see how that works as far as reception.
Does anyone have any better suggestions for how to run the antenna wire from outside to inside the car?

Funny I read this thread this morning, because I recently installed this myself. I placed the antenna for the Roady2 on the roof, over the back windshield, ran the wire along the separation between the glass and the body, down through the trunk, throught the center pass-through, along the floor, and then under the driver's seat and up between the center console and the driver's seat. The wires are virtually invisible. The reception is fine.
Which XM receiver did you get? and how did you connect to the stereo?

afeldman - I have a Roady2 as well. So there's a gap at the edge of the back windshield large enough to wedge the wire into, or did you have to use some kind of adhesive? I'm currently using the cassette adapter to connect to the stereo - _much_ better than the FM transmitter. When I got my car originally, I ordered it with a tape deck for the purpose of using it as an AUX-in. Now I'm not sure whether to get the PIE adapter or wait for Overload's solution to be finished. I've only had the Roady2 for about a week, so I haven't yet routed all the wires cleanly. Now it's a bit of a rat's nest.

I've got mine centered inside the rear window. I rarely get any dropouts. Crutchfield installed it and I told them to test it because I didn't want it if I had to put the antenna on the outside of the car.

Mine is a Roady, and I installed the antenna (using velcro) in the center of the deck inside the rear window. The cable is routed down the groove between the seat and the center pass-through, then under the seat and to the front under the door sill on the passenger side.
I get very few dropouts with this antenna location, and those are only under heavy tree cover.

I tried it on the deck area behind the rear seats, but reception wasn't good enough in my area. I didn't try on the inside rear window though.
Loco - is the flat magnet side pointed towards the sky, or the other side?

The flat magnet side is pointed towards the bottom. They used some sort of glue to make sure it stays in place back there....
I'm pretty sure mine is just like jtimbk2's. It's not actually ON the inside of the window, it's right below it Sorry if I wasn't clear on that.

I've got mine mounted to the rear package tray with the wire running towards the window, where it drops underneath that panel, runs over to where the nav antenna wire is run, down the driver's side of the rear seats (in the existing factory conduit), in same conduit, over to the center console (pretty much had to remove all of the rear interior) up through the console, and finally into the backside of my ashtray installation for my Roady2.

Great info! I'm getting ready to install my Roady this weekend (just got my 8 Monday!) Where are you folks mounting your Roadies? I looked and the best I found so far is the cupholder area, but I'm not really happy with that. Any suggestions and/or pictures?
Thanks,
Huhwha

Getting my 8 tomorrow! And I have the same Qs about my XM Roady. I didn't have the foresight to ask for the tape deck (I think it's about $150) - has anyone tried the FM modulator?
As far as mounting positions, I got a sticky cellphone pad from Radioshack that I have installed in my Nissan Pathfinder - works great and doesn't leave any residue on my dash when I move it.

Chodapopp - The FM modulator sounds noticeably better than a normal FM signal, since the bandwidth of the XM signal uses it to its fullest extent. But the cassette adapter sounds noticeably better than that, like CD quality.

Ashtray mount all the way - and with the door to cover it. Right now I'm modulating, but if Overload comes to market with a line in, I'm there. Looks clean, sounds good.
