Where do you put your cell phone?
 

Sorry if this has been asked; I couldn't find a similar thread with Search.

Just wondering where everyone puts their cell phone while driving. Please refrain from sermons about talking while driving -- I've heard all that. I don't charge my phone in the car, and don't have a mount. The only convenient place I can find to keep it in case it rings while driving is in my cup holder which, of course, sux if I want to put a drink there. Anyone found any good alternative?

Ash tray, I have a small phone thought and I dont smoke, I have the Nokia 6610

my lap, but most of the time i forget that i put my phone in my lap, so when i leave the car, flies right out. but cup holder is real cool

Usually my pocket, where I leave it most of the time. Unless I think I'll need it (e.g. for the directions I wrote down), then my cup warmer with the top shut (cause I hate when my arm falls in).

In my backpack. I dread picking it up while I'm driving. I don't want to look like a bumbling soccer mom while in my 8. :cool:

First cupwarmer (lid closed, ala robertdot) or pants pocket (with hands-free--I'm not coordinated enough to work the shifter and the phone).

I put it in the oven...aka the drink holder with the lid closed. :)

Walmart and other places sell these little padded magnets with adhesive backing. I put one next to the shifter and my phone just sits on it. I can even use the speakerphone on it if I need to. I'll do pics when I can.

I put my phoneclip where the visor is and then i clip my phone in. its pretty convenient because when it rings i can see my phone flashing all diffrent colors (my music is always loud) hers a picture

i took out the actual ashtray insert and my phone fits in there where i can see the screen...i have the samasung digicam phone so its pretty small.

otherwise it sits in my lap where i forget about it when i exit the car thereby turning it into an exspensive projectile to the concrete!

On the passenger's seat - phone off!

I have the red/black interior and my wife found a red/black clip on soda can holder at walmart. It clips on to the passenger side center vent. I keep my phone and parking garage access card in it. I'll try to remember to take pics.

I put my phone ( Samsung A530) under my crotch on vibrate. I put my phone under my crotch so i know if someone calls, funny story i was driving with my dad in the car and i was having a serious convo and all of sudden i jumped because my phone vibrated. ( my dads reaction was he was jumping and panicking because he thought something happned..lol

I used put mine there, too. One day, I watched how bad it made my computer monitor fizzle when it rings and at "random" intervals when it seems to check for things. I decided I'd rather it be doing that to my left thigh than my testicles...

But it still ends up there after I talk on it, when I occasionally talk while driving (but I hate every second of it).

In October I'll be getting the Moto V710 from Verizon. With that I'll also get the systems from Qubit and Parrot so that I can just leave my cell phone in my pocket. Then when I sit in the car it instantly via bluetooth connects to the parrot system and will answer calls over the 8's stereo. Can't wait to get it all working.

Awesome ideas, gang. Thanks for the great feedback. I will investigate a few of these solutions, esp the bluetooth/Qubit thing and kuda-phonebase. I might end up with a bluetooth phone with wireless earpiece, then I can just hide the phone in the sliding storage bin behind the cupwarmer and leave it there.

I've got the Nokia 3650 + one version (either 3620 or 3660 depending what part of the world you live in). The bluetooth handsfree kit is not worth ~100$

I've got static when I was in Alabama with the phone in my right pocket and piece on my left ear. I've had long-term (over 20 mins) connection problems with it in Los Angeles.

Wired is the way to go, unless you find a better solution.

I bought one of those things that sticks to your phone and the dashboard but there is no good places in the rx8 for this --all the areas all too rounded to stick a flat piece

Then I let the handsfree take care of figuring out where the phone is when I get a call.

I don't have a NAV system, so I used the CAVERN underneath the dash to mount the Nokia CK-1W bluetooth kit. "Industrial Strength" Velcro holds the brain in place on top of the HVAC ducts, the speaker is zip tied to the easily removable metal piece under the steering column (the one that has a piece of trim over it and then 4 screws to pull.)

Microphone is attached to the dash w/ Loctite brand "Plastix" CA adhesive. I drilled a cable diameter hole in the panel while I had it out, cut the mic cable, threaded it thru, and attached the mic to the panel. Then, I soldered the cable back together and insulated it w/ a little E-tape. I used hot glue to attach the mic cable on both sides of the splice to the underside of the dash panel, as a strain relief. Now, if something were to tug on the cable, the hotglue would take the initial impact instead of my solder joint.

The little remote button is attached to the center console w/ more Plastix CA. I disassembled the remote button and desoldered the wires, threaded thru from the underside, and reattached the wires to the remote, and reassembled it. In case you're wondering why I didnt do the same w/ the mic, I tried, but it was not cooperative w/ my disassembly attempts.

The 4 wire harness to the car runs down to the cable bundle that attaches to the back of the radio module. I used 3M cable splices to pick up +12, ground, and switched +12 (ignition sense). Then, I searched for a wire on the "mute" pin on the radio, and found none, so I stripped back a little of the wire on the Nokia harness, and just shoved the wire into the appropriate hole in the connector, and e-taped it to the bundle.

Upon reassembly and testing, I found that my mute lead hack worked, so... YAY.

Now, when I get a call, my radio mutes, and the Nokia kit speaker starts playing whatever annoying mp3 I've currently selected as a ringer (usually duelling banjos) until I punch the button on the remote. The outer ring of the remote is a volume control for the handsfree kit. When I'm done w/ the call, punch the button and the phone ends the call, and the radio comes back on.

The mute lead is NOT cool enough to actually make the display say 'MUTE' while it's activated, but it otherwise works perfectly.

3 hours work, including the trip to Lowes to grab the Velcro and the CA glue.

Well, that last post and DIY makes my little effort look pretty pathetic. However, here are my photos of the "button" magnet and how I wired up my speakerphone. Enjoy!

I'm going to buy motorola's new phone that is blutooth ready. It is totaly hands free. Put the phone on visor - wear blutooth ear piece - never touch the phone! You can dial out using voice for names or numbers and answer without thouching the phone. You can even go into camera mode by voice command. Phone is about $300 and ear piece around $80 Very cool

i'm wearing a head set for the time being until I get the moto bluetooth phone in october. But from that point I'm installing a car kit so I don't have to use one anymore and it'll just use my car stereo.

I put my Nextel i530 in the ashtray and the cupholder, although I dont like the fact the phone gets warm on both places, probably gonna do the handsfree soon, but I'd rather be driving then talking on the phone, unless of course a pretty young thing is on the other end.

I've got the Nokia 3620 (aka 3660 if you are outside of the US). It has bluetooth, so I bought the bludetooth headset from Nokia for $100. It worked fine for a little while, then one day I was getting static with the phone in my left pocket and the piece on my right ear. After I got to California, I couldn't keep the devices pared for more than a few minutes. Needless to say, my experience wasn't that good with this setup. I might try again later when I'm not so jaded by it. But for now, I just avoid talking or use the loudspeaker function on my phone.

By the way, take a look at this page. They're giving away free head sets, no joke. You just pay for shipping. Far as I can tell, there's no catch; it's a public safety thing. These are wired, not wireless, but hey they're free.

//edit// Got the headset a few weeks ago, for both me and my son. There is no gimmick and no catch. Get a free headset from these folks.

Mine (Motorola T720) lives in the driver's door pocket, turned off.

i put my charger in the back poweroutlet plug and extend the chord thru to the cup holder. i think thats where your suppose to put your cell phone charger cuz if you notice, there is a little hole when you close the lid just big enuff to put a wire thru.

If I am expecting a call, I set it on top of the steering wheel (in the well where the speedo/tach are), that way the blinking red light is visible (since I can't hear the ringer over the blaring stereo). Otherwise, I put it in the cup holder, which I just use for CDs anyways since it's worthless for cups with the 6MT.

They dont fit in there anyway lol...

I have a Treo 600 which is hard to find anything for but these guys have mounts for practically everything. Here's a pict of what I have (minus my Treo specific mount bracket).

Wow. Surprising that they support an RX-8. ProClip has always been partial to domestic cars in the past.

Anyhoo, I'd made up a mount just like that previously. However, it's just a wee bit too far to push those tiny Treo 600 keys correctly. The hard buttons, especially need a surprising amount of force. Check out my earlier post in this thread regarding magnetic buttons.

I even ran the power and speakerphone inputs through the cup holder area, so no real loose wires.

This is cheap and functional.

Last time I used the belt clip I broke the antenna off my motorola....I just bought a velcro shoulder strap thingy (like a MazdaSpeed shoulder pad) that has two pouches-one cig pack size and one cell sized at KMart for $8.00. Since hardly anyone rides when I drive it's working well. Mine's black and silver- so it matches my interior well. Not the best, but keeping the phone in my cupholder kept me from using either one cause it was always getting in the way.

In the little gap between the drivers seat and the center console, just in front of the seatbelt connecter. I have the Kyocera 7135, so its a larger phone. Smaller phones might fall through. I also have a charger plugged into the rear console power outlet, and run the cord to the cup warmer. This is where I place it if I forgot to charge the phone over night.

I've found the perfect solution for me, It's called a Sticky Pad or something like that. (and no I don't work for or no the Sticky Pad guys) It comes in approximately 4x5" sizes. The pads cost about $4.00 at Target and they really work. They hold about anything you sit on them. I didn't believe it until I tried it.

My 8 doesn't have navigation, so I trimmed a sticky pad with scissors to fit on the center console between the gear shifter and armrest. You only need to lift it off every month or so to rinse the dust off of it and it's like new again. Give it a try. At $4, you don't have much to loose. It works for me.

I use a motorola swivel mount upside so the post clips in from the bottom. I mounted it with a simple toggle bolt in the access plug below the pss airbag. with it upside down it will not be in the way should the airbag be deployed.
