Use Nav while driving?

I just purchased a 2006 RX8 w/ GT package & Nav. It's a REAL bummer that you can hardly use any of the features while driving. I'm used to my little Garmin Nuvi, which in my opinion is 100's times better than the Mazda one. Is there a way that I can disable the function of the Nav usage while driving? It's gotta be just a wire or something that tells the Nav when the car is moving, right? Any help would be appreciated, as this is driving me crazy!! you can't even look up the turn list while driving!! Also, Is there an updated Nav disc newer than my 2006 version? It's already terribly outdated. Thanks for your help!!

the navi is tied to the car's wheels, it knows how fast you're going and in what direction so that it can function even with gps signal is lost.

I have a 2004 model, navi works while car is moving.

I'm not sure what's supposed to be different between the 2006 navigation and the 2004 navigation; but the 2004 gives the nanny warning every time it boots up, so if I stall the engine, I have to clear the nanny warning again. If I plot in a course before I start the engine, so I don't waste fuel idling, I have to clear the nanny warning when I start the engine to get under way. If I change my mind about my destination, I have no trouble plotting a new course, or, should it be my wish, add or remove intermediate destinations (via points) while under way. Does the 2006 navigation not have this capability too?

Yeah. A lot of the nav system is disabled when you're driving.

They do it so you don't kill someone while trying to figure out how to type out Embarcadaro st while driving in traffic.

The 2006 must be different than the '04's Nav units, because, I definitely can not plot destinations while driving, or even look for certain destinations while driving, I have to pull over, stop the vehicle, then wait for the functions to return on the Nav unit, and only then could I go into the main menu and plot a destination. I actually have owned several portable nav units (Garmin 205, 260, 750, and a TomTom), and I am so used to being able to type in a location while driving, it REALLY sucks that this doesn't allow you to do such a simple function. And I can not look up the turn list while driving either, which really stinks, cuz it's nice to be able to look up what your next turn is going to be, or what turns you will be making on the trip, but you can't. I don't understand why the 2004's would have this function, but not the 2006. The safety argument I believe is a bunch of bull, as EVERY portable Nav you buy can be operated while driving.

Anyway, I guess no body knows how to disable this feature, or maybe it is something that can't be over-ridden, especially if it's really connected to your wheels and such. If anybody knows, please let me know. Thanks!!
