well i came into a similar problem last week when my trunk 3rd brake light and right tail brake light went out. didnt notice till i went to one of the local meets and had another member tell me they were out.
i took both bulbs out and looked up the bulb code, and since they looked similar i thought it was the same bulb. turns out the trunk bulb was 7440 while the tail light brake lights were 7443.
as far as i know, the trunk brake light only comes on when you press on the brake.

Are you guys talking about the same bulb? I think he means the one INSIDE the trunk...That illuminates whats being stored in the trunk, not the ones that people see when you slow down.

on the inside of the trunk latch, under the cover when you look down when the trunk is open, is a microswitch. my lights wouldnt flash when i locked and unlocked the car and the trunk light stayed on 24/7.
turns out this switch was fried and the wires melted. caused a permenant short and the car though the trunk was open all the time. (remote still popped it though because thats a separate circuit) youll see if you take that panel off, just lift straight up on it. 3x10mm bolts remove the latch, flip it over and check out the switch. looks similar to the old wide open throttle switches from NOS kits. just smaller. if yours fried, and the wires didnt melt together, yours could be telling the ecu that the trunk is closed all the time, and the light wont come on but the alarm armed lights will still flash when you lock and unlock the car.
everybody always says "go clost your trunk" when people complain these lights wont flash but sometimes its something different.
FYI, a new complete latch is ~$250 from Mazda, but the microswitch can be gotten at radio shack for 3 bucks. might have to splice the wiring and drill a couple holes to mount the switch since its not the exact one that goes there but it solved my problem.. also, careful where you mount that switch if thats what you have to do. if its not over far enough, when you slam the trunk, the latch pops past it and gets hung and youll have to climb through the back seat, pull that plastic panel out and remove the 3 bolts with your *** hanging out into the cabin. ask me how i know. so plan well if you end up having to do this or at least dont put that panel on till you know it works perfectly.
