Subwoofer recommendations for RX8

Hello, I just bought a Shinka, love the ride. Would like to add a subwoofer for the low end bass. Any suggestions? I would think all I need is a 6 or 8" single box.
Thanks much

DD makes a skookum 8", in your 8 though, I would prefer a 10". A 6" driver can and will produce the same low bass note as a 15" can, it just cannot do it with the same amplitude.

When looking for subs you have to think of a couple of things.

1. What exactly are you wanting to do - in your case you want LOW end bass

2. How much are you willing to spend?

2.5 - How much do you know about doing it yourself or are you going to pay to have it done?

3. How much trunk are you willing to give up?

If you're going for LOW END bass you should really think about a 12 or a 10 at the smallest. You CAN do an 8 but it's not going to be anywhere near as low as a 12 unless you put some SERIOUS power in it and build a box designed for lows. I think your best bet all around would a nice 10 maybe anAlpine Type X 10" - 1000 W RMS and put it in the 4080 box on the side of your trunk.

^^^ not exactly accurate. Power does not make a speaker play low, it makes it play louder, hence adds amplitude. A 4" speaker can play the same low bass note as a 18", it just cannot do it with the same amplitude as it would break the mechanical barrier that makes it work. I have heard 4" speakers that have belted out quite the low note with authority for that matter at the same time. It is all in how it is matched together, box - amp - sub - user.

Actually an 8w7 will hit lows better than most 12s the cone area doesnt matter nearly as much as the excursion for low end an 18 w3 hits highs better and louder than my w7s

With JL, you pay for the name...
I have never heard the 9500 in person, but I really don't think I want to. The Qts is well over 0.5 for all the subs with the 10 inch being especially high at .831!!

http://www.mtx.com/caraudio/products...a_T9510-44.pdf

Qts' this high are usually reserved specifically for free-air subs. This will make it very difficult to get a flat system response out of the sub unless you use a very large box. When the 9500 first came out MTX showed response plots for it that confirmed what I am saying. They are now suspiciously absent.

I strongly respect Tom Nousaine and Eric Holdaway who represent two of the best audio/subwoofer reviewers in the business but Eric reviewed the 8500 and Tom reviewed the 12" 9500 (and maybe he was thinking in terms of SPL during his review).

I guess it comes down to your definition of "quality" but dB monster isn't exactly what I'm looking for. (If you want dBs there are a lot of inexpensive ways to do it.) JL is more than just a name.

With all that said, get a 9500, put it in a large box, throw 1000 Watts at it and equalize the response like crazy and I guess you could get some good results.

any 10" will make your mirror shake, even if it's not crossed over properly.
I'm pretty happy with my 2 Soundstream 10's, they just came out with a series called the "reference" series and they sound great, they're not hideously expensive, and they hold up pretty well. They also have the tarantula's for ported boxes, and those things are flippin' crazy. There's a car the shop that did mine just finished recently that swept its class using all Soundstream equipment, SQ judge even said " that was the best sounding car I've ever heard", this was a guy who judges vehicles all across the nation so that's saying a lot right there It's your car anyway, go with what you like, just know that some brands carry a premium and some are overrated as well, so be careful out there.

How do you guys feel about powered subs like the Infinity Basslink series? I know the Basslink II won over a lot of the Jeep crowd (where I used to hang) because of the bang for the buck as well as small space it took up of an even smaller trunk than the 8's.

I searched through the forums and it seems like a few people have done installs on them. I know its not killer and won't win any competitions, but does it complement the Bose system well if you're looking to just fill in the bottom?

The basslink fills in the bass, but it isn't booming. Of course, it barely takes up any space. I've listened to the Basslink and this JL Audio box back to back in 8s with the same tracks. The pre-built box fits really well in the shelf against the back seats and is superior to the Basslink in sound, but it obviously takes up a lot more room and needs a seperate amp.

About as helpful as your comment.
Back to the topic though:

Infinity makes good products. If you are not too worried about looks, then I think the Basslink would be an excellent choice for the sound quality and relative ease of the installation. I do no have infinity subs, but I replaced 2 of the 6x9s with infinitys and the other 2 with alpine. Even though alines are a little more expensive, I am beginning to think the infinitys sound better, esp. in the low ranges. I also had a friend with a full infinity system and a speaker blew and it still sounded damn good for the cone being cracked. (the blowout was his fault for messing with amp settings). But yeah, infinity is a good choice.

I went for clean, so I went with a 10" Eclipse DVC in a 4080 box as recommended by forbidden. Couldn't be happier.
