Steering wheel controls with aftermarket HU

Hey everyone,

I have the PAC SWI-Jack to enable the steering wheel controls with my Alpine IVA-W505. The installation instructions say to connect the white wire from the SWI-Jack to pin 9 (I think) of the vehicle harness. It also says to ground pin 10 "if available." Is everyone doing this step? It seemed optional (which also seemed weird) but I didn't do it, and my SWI-Jack doesn't seem to see anything from the steering wheel controls.
