Simple head unit-speaker question.

Ok so I initially planned on replacing the speakers and headunit, but I read on another topic that by replacing the headunit you will lose the ability to work the A/C and Heater. So now I only want new speakers, nothing too fancy just decent bass and the ability to get somewhat loud(to hear over the engine) =P with nice quality still. Any Suggestions? I'm looking for a total of around 500$ for front and rear speakers.

where ever you read that is wrong. there are plenty of people who have replaced headunits and retained all the factory functionality.

For $500 you'll have plenty of options. I would recommend a 6.75" component set for the fronts and 6x9" coaxials for the rear deck. You'll probably want to devote 2/3 of your speaker allotment to the fronts as that will provide the main soundstage. While there's a large variety of options, Focal seem to be a popular choice around the forum for components. I am personally quite happy with the performance from my Infinity Kappa 60.9cs components. I would also suggest considering Polk speakers.

For the rear deck, I personally prefer to stick to the same brand, though other people often mix. Again, there will be plenty of options for your price range.

Your post didn't mention the type of factory system you have. If you have the stock system, then a straight replacement should work quite nicely; however, if you have the Bose system, you'll probably want to also add a 4-channel amp as the Bose amps scattered throughout the car do not provide linear response to the speaker leads.

If you are also considering replacing the head unit, the cost of the Metra Turbo2 dash kit and a decent head unit can quickly add up to $500 or more.
