Safe areas for drilling into trunk?

I'm mounting a sub box in my trunk and wanted to know what areas are safe for drilling holes. Specifically, I wanted to know about the area directly behind the back seats and the vertical portion of the indentation closest to the back seat. Does anyone know?

Usually it is best not to drill through to the outside of the vehicle if possible. This prevents any drilling accidents and doesn't contribute to new places for rust and/or water intrusion. I would recommend using the brackets where the spare tire mounts or something similar.

I installed my box yesterday without drilling through the bottom of the trunk (to the outside of the car). I had this idea in case I decided not to drill into the trunk. I think I used the area where the spare tire would mount, but I never had one either and didn't really pay attention to the pictures of them. I'll post pictures of it here later. Thanks jstkilntim, I knew it could be a very bad idea, but I saw a few installs where members drilled into the trunk and figured they knew where it was safe and took precautions against rust. I used some crazy strong plastic velcro from home depot on the bottom of the box. With only five 4"x1" inch strips I had trouble removing the box on purpose. It rips out the whole carpet unless I carefully reach under and pry away the strips. That stuff is really strong and enough of it could hold the box, but it would rip the carpet up and I don't trust it that much so I put to brackets on the top. They can't be seen from eye-level and it's not like i'm entering car shows anyway. I'm sure you could do it the same way and make it look great.

Great. It is alway best to mount it solid w/ brackets etc. to prevent sound pressure loss due to slight movement of the box. It also keeps it there longer if someone decides to investigate your trunk in the middle of the night. There are ways to prevent rust when a hole is drilled, but chances are 99% of the time, people just pop in a screw & go, especially when going through the carpet also.

I plan to clean up the wiring later. The brackets were about $3 each and seem strong. I drilled the top two mounting holes myself so they would be in the right position.

Do you mind me asking the demensions of your box? I'm in the process of bulding one and that looks like right on the money. Did you angle the box like this? The picture is property of G8rboy.

This is the box I used. http://www.millionbuy.com/hbx10ktm.html I have kicker s10l7s so it was perfect and probably cheaper and I know easier than me attempting to build my first box. Dimensions (WxHxDxT): 25 ½" x 12 ½" x 12" x 9". Be careful getting anything bigger than the trunk openning, I could barely get it in with the speakers installed. Some members had to assemble their boxes in the trunk because of the small openning. The box seems great so far except for the terminals; they should be of a higher quality to justify the retail being $120, but I paid $55 so I can't complain too much. At some point I may get around to changing them out. Also the carpet is sort of a charcoal black, so it's darker than the trunk carpet. Personally, I wanted to match the trunk color until I saw it. To me, the contrast looks better than the monotonous all-grey trunks I've seen. You may have noticed the foam from my back seats, I took out the plastics dividers because of the rattling. Until I shake some more stuff loose it sounds perfect. This box is at a greater slope than gr8boy's. If I remember correctly he matched his to the 60 degree slope of the back seats to maximize space.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize that you had two LS7's, I bet it hits pretty hard.

I went to every shop in my area trying to find a subwoofer enclosure that would fit into the opening of the RX8, with no success. I had planned on getting 2 10's, but my brother gave me his 12' sub, I hooked it up and decided that it was good enough for my needs. The only problem is that its in a funky ported box and I want something cleaner.
