Guys: I need to get an iPod connector installed in my new 2007 RX-8 and was wondering what my options were. I'm not particularly technologically inclined, so I would like to just head somewhere and pay for an install. Outside of going to the dealer, what are my options? FWIW, I'm in North Jersey.

I'm really tired of listening to the same Rammstein CD when driving.

 

Your option is to order the parts and take it to an audio installer and have them do it for lots and lots of money.

 

If you are asking what adapters are available; I have the OEM iPod adapter but seriously looking at the DICE iPod adapter. The DICE adapter allows for text display on the 8's LED display... the OEM does not. Both allow for control of the iPod through the steering wheel. There are other options out there though.

 

I just bought the OEM Ipod Adapter. While it does not display text on the display, it does allow you to access all of your songs and utilize playlists. The steering wheel controls are functional for it as well. I got mine from www.finishlineperformance.com and had it installed at my local dealer while my car was in for warranty work. Install costs were $150.

I was quoted some $400 to install the OEM iPod connector at the stealership, NOT including the $150 OEM iPod connection itself.

What you should do is:

1)Find iPod connection of choice (I chose PIE)
2) Do it yourself.

I'm VERY technically inept, but was able to do this procedure very quickly. I can pull radio out in less than 5 minutes now (i've forever left out the 10mm bolt, accessible from under the steering wheel).

 

Thanks for the info, guys. Given that I'm too dumb to do it myself, I'd like to find an installer to handle it. So my best route is to just get an adapter and take it to an installer to do it for a fee? How do I find such an installer? I'm totally clueless when it comes to cars. Us liberal arts majors aren't technologically inclined, but we can tell you a lot about the works of Sigmund Freud!

 

It is really easy to do....that website that was given a few posts up give a step by step destructions of the install. There is only one hard part and even then it wasnt that hard just a pain to find the "hidden" bolt. I got my ipod adapter from RPM, reasonably priced and got it in two days.

 

If you really feel like you can't do it, most audio install shops will do it for around 50 bucks or so. They will probably charge you for an hours worth of labor which will vary by location and shop but is normally around 40-70 dollars (at least around me). Look in your yellow pages under "Automobile Radios and Stereo Systems". That should give you an idea of who is around in your area.

You can also try posting in your respective regional forum with your location and see if anyone in the area can recommend a good shop or someone that might be willing to meet up with you and help you with the install.

Having said that, it is really REALLY easy to do it yourself. As long as you read the directions posted above you won't have much trouble. Besides we are here to answer questions if you have them.

 

Don't bother with the OEM adapter, it is awful! It disables the ipod which is a PITA when you want to search for something specific.

There is absolutely no pro to getting it when compared with some of the other solutions such as the audiolink. They provide the same functionality but leave the ipod accessible should you want to change to a specific playlist or artist.

 

im also thinking of getting an ipod adapter, i would probably have a go at doing it myself. But after reading what everyone says about the oem one now i dont know whether to get that one. Im going to look into the DICE one now

 

Before I installed the corksport dash kit with the pioneer avic d3x i had the audiolink adapter. Less expensive then OEM, leaves you with full control of Ipod, and you can also control it from the steering wheel.
