Rear Fog Light Install

I know this has been done before but here's another rear fog install. I had to lose the rear accent. By the time I cut it down to fit over the Fog Light there was so little left it didn't look right.

Looks great dosdog. Maybe another idea is to paint the outside rim with metallic paint, somebody wrote a DIY about making inexpensive rotary accents. I'll try to find that thread.

TheDosDog,

That paint code mentioned in the thread is "GM 3859 Silver M B/C 0-71915-03859-4", I'll bring some for Saturday.

That looks good.

Looks nice! Did you install it yourself or did you have it done? Is it the full rear fog kit or did you just install the light? Are you using it as a rear fog or have you got it hooked up to your running lights or brake light?

I've got the just the light housing and the switch sitting in a box waiting until the nice weather comes. Still looking for the proper connectors though for both pieces. Can anyone help?

Broose,

Yes, I installed it myself with my handy dremel. It's the whole kit but I haven't installed the wiring yet. That's this weekend's project. It will operate only as fog light. I have a schematic in the instructions which includes the relays and cpu that come with the kit. I'll scan it and post just in case it will help.

Looks great DosDog! I love my rear fog... have you noticed yet how this rear fog glints in all light like some kind of a gigantic jewel?

Omicron,

That's why I decided to leave the accent off. I looks like a giant ruby in the right light.

DosDog, here's a .gif with the connectors you were asking about. Also I ran across another thread by Omicron which you might find useful; his installation was fairly complex, with a homebrew pulse-width modulation device but did have some connector info and pics.

Hope this helps

The plastikote will do thetrick since its touch up paintand it has its own little nail polish brush w/the tube. But the paint I used was a little brighter than the plastikote touch up. RX-8 2004 recommended it after he did his mesh -- Testors Silver Enamel paint and I bought a #4 brush. If youare going to paint around there I thinkyou should also tape up the bottom of the bumper otherwise you may have to use black paint to cover up silver spots of paint that may accidently driponto the bottom of the bumper as you are painting the mesh or symbol. I agree w/BrotherVoodoo the rear fog mightlook better w/the accent painted or maybe even the mesh. Also I reallylike how the fog light lookson your green Rx8.

Thanks Nubo for posting the wiring diagram. What I was referring to when I asked if anyone could help me out with connectors, I mean the physical harnesses that will match up with my dash switch and the rear fog light housing. I didn't buy the whole kit as I didn't want to install it that way. But now I need connectors for both the switch and light so I can begin installing it.

If anyone can help out please let me know. Or, if someone has the whole kit and hasn't installed it yet, could they post a detailed picture of the connector that hooks into the light housing and the dash switch (and/or a picture of the the switch and light ports). Maybe if people knew what it was, they may know of a common Mazda part that might fit. Thanks in advance.

I finished the wiring on the rear fog light. As it turns out the wiring in the kit does not exactly fit US spec 8s. DSC, keyless and fog light connections are fine but the connections to the cluster switch are totally reversed. Thankfully there are only 2 wires in this plug that actaully connect to the 8 (Yellow/Red & Light Green/Black). So two spices and it was done. There is also a connection to the speedo cluster that I assume is for an indicator but I stongly suspect the US speedo assy does not support this feature. I'll convert this to an LED at some point in the future. With the CPU and relays installed the rear light will only come on if the front fogs and headlights are on. If either is turned off the rear fog goes off. When they are turned back on you must push the rear fog button to turn it back on.

Something to consider if you are not getting the whole kit and want to use the OEM rear fog switch - This switch is not the on/ off type. It is only on when you are pushing it. Therefore if you're thinking of wiring it straight to the fog light you may get tired of driving with your finger on the button

All in all this wasn't a bad install. If anyone is interested I put together a "things I wish I had known" list for anyone else interested in installing the rear fog with OEM wiring.

Splicing in the OEM JDM rear fog harness yeilded an interesting result. The front fog lights come on with the marker lights when the fog light switch is the "off" position. Turn it "on" and the fogs will come on with the low beams (normal). I'm sure this is not the intended functionality but it allows me to use the fog lights, front and rear, with or without the xenons. Cool

How did you find that out? I purchased just the rear fog light itself and the rear fog dash switch (not the split switch with the DSC). I plan on putting it one of the dummy spots. It's not installed yet but it doesn't make sense that Mazda would make it that way.

Put an Ohm meter across the switch contacts and push the button.

It is a pain to wire them... I read through them and although I know Japanese, I gave it to my dealer to fix it, 6 hours and A$200 later it works perfectly. They have to take the side plastic, rear seat and rear side carpet and rear bumper off...

I admire that you can do it yourself

It is what I have taken

Rear Fog Indicator Mod

The OEM Rear fog kit has a red wire that goes to the cluster in order to illuminate an indicator that informs you when the rear fog light is on. Unfortunately the US spec instrument cluster does not have this indicator. If you have installed this kit you realize the need for one. I recently installed the illuminated shift **** and subsequently realized a solution. I wired the indicator lead to the shift **** illumination. It was too bright for my taste any way. Now when the rear fog light is on the shift **** glow bright.

I've been using my rear fog almost every night driving thru Skyline Drive in Daly City. That "fix" is very cool and also serves a purpose because having an indicator for the rear fog is in fact very helpful. Instead of turning-off the rear light with the combo switch I have been flicking the front fogs Off/On, at least that way I KNOW that the rear is also turned off (don't want to ride around with the rear on when it's not needed). Again, thumbs-up on your inventive fix..

Here's a more cost effective indicator. $ 1.99 at Radio Shack.
