OK - I just ordered my RX-8 last week and it should be here next week. S-Plan eligible - so I got a sweet deal.

I am afraid to ask such a stupid question, but here it goes:

Where is the 12V outlet? I couldn't see it on the pictures.

I would like to buy a new Radar Detector and want to get an idea as to where the cord is going to go. At this point I am not ready to hard wire it.

There's one at the bottom of the center stack, and one in the center storage console between the seats.

That explains it. On the Mazda website they are not shown because everything is closed.

I was debating between the Escort 8500 or the Cordless S2. I am concerned that the S2 won't be as good as the 8500 (or the battery might go dead when I am driving).

In the past (when I used a detector), I would generally mount it, then run wiring up through the headliner of the car from the fuse box to the detector so there were no hanging wires and my lighter outlet was free. Of course, that was in the "old days" when cars only came with one lighter outlet.

Yeah I know I am going to get tired of the cord real quick and will probably have it professional installed. I am not ready to begin working on the car myself (I wouldn't hesitate if it was a POS).

I didn't need a radar detector until recently. Usually was driving relatively locally or with family in the car. Now I occasionally have a 2 hour highway commute that is begging me to get a ticket.

May not be as hard as you may think. You could check out options detailed on this thread. There are other threads as well. Of course some of us are crazy enough to rip all the interior trim pieces out. :0 So your comfort level may vary.
