Prosport Gauges Install problems and questions

Recently me and gregs attempted to hook up three prosport premium gauges (with the peak function) up to my 8 in the racing beat gauge pod. It is the boost gauge, water temp gauge, and oil pressure gauge. right now they are only connected to the power source so that they turn on.

we ran into a couple problems. the gauges would turn on when the key was turned (engine off) and then they would begin to beep and do the normal sweep. afterwards the gauges would keep beeping and flashing nonstop. the boost gauge just reads maximum.

gregs will post in this thread soon and explain it a bit better hopefully.

does anyone have any experience setting up or installing the prosport premium gauges? id appreciate any input, thanks!

im no expert, but if those are electronic gauges, the sweep/dance they do at the beginning is part of a "system check" type function. they may stop doing that once you have all the apprpriate senders connected to them

nuke0907 02-17-2009 08:07 PM

yeah, you need inputs.

05rex8 02-17-2009 08:16 PM

where did you tap in for power?

\\Konig\\ 02-17-2009 08:24 PM

whoa didnt expect the responses so quickly!

gregs is the man who knows all the answers so ill wait til he hops on then he can answer that for you!

gregs 02-18-2009 12:35 AM

the power source i used was the power point harness from the ash tray that was removed...i connected the red & white wires from the prosport gauge harness together for a power source when turning the key to the on position...the orange wire i used the power source when turning on the parking lights....i tried plugging in the oil pressure sending unit harness and gauges including the oil pressure still had the continuous problem of flashing and beeping constantly however we didnt start the car...think that would make a difference?

the only inputs you mean is the actual harness that will connect to the sensors correct? in each gauge came with a extra harness which consisted of the four colors red/white/orange/black but the instructions didnt say anything about hooking up that extra harness it looked like it may have been for an additional ad-on?

ground them separate.

just advice. but the above is correct.

beers

Huh?

Did you guys follow the threads related to the gauges?

https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...1&postcount=13

And since all of your gauges are the PS Premium the grounds are built in. You should be able to run your senders to the gauges and then the gauges to the power off the cig lighter without any problems. Just follow the wiring in the linked thread.

EDIT: You do know the extra harness on the upper part of the gauges is for you to piggy back the power, right? The senders should be in the bottom right and the power should be piggy backed in 2 of the three gauges. The third should be brought down to the lighter in the sequence described in the linked post. Red and white to the power, orange to the other thing, and black to the ground. The green reference in the linked post is from non-Premium gauges which don't have the sender harness with the negative ground built in.

so then the main problem is that the senders arent connected? if we did not piggy back the power from gauge to gauge would that affect them in a bad way?

most likely

if you piggy-back the gauges, there will be less wires to splice in for power and such. thats what the little harnesses are with 4 wires that gregs was talking about.

So I have my oil temp gauge installed; all the power is working. I did an oil change, installed RB adapter w/ sender blah blah. Turn on car and oil has no temp... the needle just sits on the 120 mark. I double checked all the wiring, do you think Prosport sent me a bad sending unit?

Ross_Dawg 02-28-2009 07:42 PM

Nvm, figured it out. Works good now :)

I put a switch in the light power lines (white & orange), so I have complete control of the colors - Full white-on-black, amber, or a nice muted red with just the needles a little brighter.

I'm pretty sure the red is the background needle illumination, which must work all the time from the gauges' power line.

What was it?

Ross_Dawg 03-01-2009 12:05 AM

I had to "reset" the gauge by holding the peak button down for 5 seconds in peak mode. I love how it never says that in the instructions lol.

Stealth, what kind of switch? I would love to try that darker red out without having to take apart my center console everytime lol

Pics of the gauges, with a crappy drawing of the switch.

The point of the switch is that if you don't connect EITHER the white OR the orange wire, you get red. You have to have the switch in the center 'red' position at startup, once you select white or amber, the gauge won't go back to red.

Switch is $5 at Radio Shack.

Damn, that's a fancy interior! Thanks for the help, will be going to R.S. tomorrow ;)

\\Konig\\ 03-02-2009 12:21 AM

okay so gregs hooked up the gauges today besides the water temp which will be done next week

the boost gauges seems to work fine, shows im boosting only 6 psi max but that will be discussed in another thread...

there is one problem i am having with the oil pressure gauge. whenever i turn the key to the on or accessory position (without engine running) the oil temp gauge starts up and then starts beeping and flashing constantly. when the car is running it functions perfectly though. i set the mute by holding the peak button during the startup sequence but everytime i turn the car off the gauges seem to get reset and next time i turn the key it begins to beep again.

gregs guess is that the gauges need a constant power source to retain their memory instead of being reset everytime the car key is turned off and on.

any suggestions/help?

laythor 03-02-2009 12:25 AM

sounds like a bad gauge

gregs 03-02-2009 12:52 AM

just like konig mentioned...when the car is turned off the oil pressure guage will not stop flashing until the car is turned on....we also noticed when setting up the peak the memory is only retained until the car is turned of then all memory is lost....is there a certain wire on the gauge harness that needs to be hooked up to constant power to retain the memory?

Yes this is correct. Sadly I don't have the prosport wiring information in front of me but there is a switched power wire and a constant power wire. The constant wire is what will retain your peak readings and settings.

The nice feature also is if you silence a gauge from beeping it will retain that setting. I have my oil pressure silenced so it doesn't beep when the car is off. It still flashes though.

Ross_Dawg 03-02-2009 01:19 AM

Well the Prosport wiring was really not that much help at all, and their dont seem to be instructions on here referring to peak gauges, as the wiring is different than the regular gauges

nice....so now just gotta figure out which wire i need to hook up the constant power and all issues should be resolved
