Off, Quiet, or LOUD? This normal?
I just purchased an '04 RX8 and I noticed the stereo seems wonky. I don't know what it's maximum level is, but it seems as if 0 is mute, 1 is really quiet, and 2 is too loud, IE it's difficult to hear normal conversation, and it just gets louder from there. Is this normal for an 8? This seems ab-normal for any car, to have the stereo either off, too soft to hear, or blaring. Could this be fixed with an after market stereo system? I was planning on putting in a Pioneer DVD/CD/GPS/KITCHEN SINK unit which costs about a grand just to buy.

Something is amiss. Sounds like you got an amp issue.
2 is too loud?
I normally drive around on 10 with windows up.
I will increase to 18 sometimes however.
I would say I'm pretty quiet until it reaches about 5.

You could have a standard radio in a Bose equipped car. This would send a speaker level signal to the Bose amp which expects a line level signal. This will make the system do pretty much what you are describing. Volume attenuation will go to **** because the Bose amp will amplify the already internally amplifed signal from the headunit.
The opposite happens when you use a Bose equipped headunit in a standard audio car. The Volume will be very weak since the line level signal from the Bose HU is now trying to directly power the speakers. Overall volume would be pretty low, even on the highest settings.
Without any further knowledge on the car, what is aftermarket or not, or if there is anything aftermarket at all, this would be my first guess.
Oh, the volume goes up to about 33 or 35, can't remember, but it is in the 30's if I recall correctly, don't have my 8 anymore to go check for you. I would personally figure out what is wrong with it, and fix it before spending any significant money on an upgrade. It is always better to start with something that is properly working before spending money on something that could possibly complicate the problems. This way, if it works before the upgrade, and doesn't after, you can narrow out possible problems quite easily.
