New electrical power point?

I use a radar detector (NHTSA and Washington State Patrol forgive me ), and I do not like running the cord down over the face of the dash to the cigarette light in the covered compartment.

So - has anyone found a good place to install an auxiliary outlet, preferably to the left of the steering wheel?

OR

Has anyone run a aux power cord from somewhere in the dash or fuse panel to lay on the dash, awaiting being plugged in?

i ran a hard wire from the fuse box to the detector which is just to the right of the rear view mirror.
