Nav voice not shutting off

I have the nav system and like it a lot, but I would prefer to be able to have the "voice feedback" muted most of the time and use the screen cues. When audio is desired I can press the "voice" button to get an update.

Well, the voice guidance will NOT turn off (without setting the volume to zero, which disables all voice functions -- not acceptable). I have gone to [setup] [system] [voice feedback] in the menu and set it to OFF, but it makes NO difference -- the vioce is still on. I have taken it to my dealer and they called Mazda and were only told how to use the menu! Do they think we are stupid or something? The dealer kept my car overnight and couldn't find out how to turn the voice off. They compared it to another 8 on their lot, and the new one does the same thing!

What is happening here? Why is there a setting in the menu that does absolutely nothing? Does anybody's work?

Very funny. Yes, I could also stop driving the car, that would do it too. NOT ACCEPTABLE

I think you misunderstood Mike....there is a menu selection to turn guidance off....that will shut her up while you still have your nav up and running...when guidance is on she's talking you thru each step....when your at your map screen press enter...then select guidance off and she'll be quiet

Perhaps I did misunderstand -- sorry for the rude tone, Mike.
However, I know this menu option and it is not the solution. I want the route guidance to be on and give me turn info on the screen, but just not nag me with the "BOING -- TURN AHEAD" sounds except when I want them (when I will press the "voice" button). This ought to be what happens when I select "voice feedback = OFF" in the menu. It doesn't. In fact the "voice feedback ON/OFF" option makes no difference in anything at all.

No harm done and I hope no offense taken!
I only wish it were so easily done. I am sure that this function is not working as designed and I'd like to get some idea how to get Mazda to fix it.

i cant tell you if your navigation is not working correctly, but i can tell you how mine works.
in teh setup menu there is an option which allowsme to choose volume level (from 0 to 5 i think). i have noticed myself a couple of times turning the volume to 0 and have her still talking to me. i think it is because i am moving the cursor to volume 0 and then returning out by using the pos/ret buttons. or maybe it is because i am not hitting enter when i choose the new volume. either way, it doesnt register the change in volume.
also with the volume turned on, i have the ability to turn navigation off by using the enter button menu. the map still does all its wonderful things like zoom in on turns, display eta/direction/etc, but without distracting from my music
if your navigation doesnt work like that, then i am truly sorry. because thats the way i use mine the most :`(

Cool, some info to compare!

That's because you didn't hit <OK> before exiting the setup menu.
also with the volume turned on, i have the ability to turn navigation off by using the enter button menu. the map still does all its wonderful things like zoom in on turns, display eta/direction/etc, but without distracting from my music
Yes, that's what MikeB said. But the nav does not show you the next turn info in the green band at the top of the screen when guidance is off. What I want is to have the guidance on but the voice feedback off without setting the volume to zero. The "voice feedback" on/off setting in the setup menu (system submenu) ought to do this -- or at least do SOMETHING.
if your navigation doesnt work like that, then i am truly sorry. because thats the way i use mine the most :`(
Mine does what you have described.
Can you or anyone with the nav systen try going to the setup menu, then to the system submenu and trying to set "voice feedback" to OFF (press <OK> after setting to OFF) and let me know if it does anything? It ought to stop the nav system from talking to you all the time after you have set a destination, but make her talk when you press the "voice" button.
Thanks for the feedback.

last night i went across town to "the cheesecake factory". god i love that restaurant so i turned the volume up, nav on and set my destination. after negotiating a few of the turns, i turned the volume off in teh setup menu. i still got the screen highlights. BTW i love how it zooms in on teh intersection when you approach so you can see what lane you want to be in. but when i press my voice button, all i get is a beep. so i turned the volume back on and still all i get is a beep...
i'm going to break down and read my manual today because i dont understand what the voice button does :?

I have the exact same question! I checked the manual but it still didn't make any sense.
