Hey, just want to see how you're doing on this. I do a little programming on the side, and I was looking at recreating this when you're all finished. I'm running with the OEM nav screen right now, and this looks like a much cheaper replacement than installing a full on Car PC. Is there anything that you would have done differently from your setup as of now?

I have the OEM full nav housing and may convert to it at some point if I can find a newer tablet with a form factor that is convertible. I'd really like to be able to drop bluetooth for audio sound and control integration too but its been so painless that it's more of a purest thing than anything else.

I'll be revamping the OBD2 communications API soon. One that is done I'll likely publish all source in a public GitHub repo.

you've been keeping busy, some great stuff in here Shell!
That new Nexus Tablet coming out soon might be just what's in order for someone looking to do something similar.

It's essentially the same size as the Dell Streak (Streak 7.87"x4.72"x0.49" and Nexus 7.69"x4.72"x0.41") and the Nexus doesn't have an SD slot of any kind.

I'll definitely look at it ... will likely pick it up either way too. Would prefer a 4G version.

the missing SD slot really sucks, wonder how it'll handle external storage. (flash drive?)
Although, with google music and such, I'm pretty sure I can make due with the 16gb for a carpc project

shove this thing into the nav housing and you've got a winner! (at one hell of a price I might add)

4G would be nice but I just have something against paying a monthly fee for a tablet of all things...
root / tether 4G phone with unlimited data and you're set.

The nexus tablet looks like it would be about perfect for the task!

My guess is that it won't. You're going to be stuck with the internal memory, just like the iPad. Think 16GB is the largest one being offered. And that's total space, so all apps will eat at this space too. That's a deal breaker for me. My 80GB iPod is packed. I can trim it down to 64GB no problem, but 16GB is out of the question. And streaming Google Music would necessitate internet access. I'm not tethering my phone every single time I get in the car just to listen to music. It's cheap though, I'll give it that much.

And I'm with you Jedi. Not a chance in hell I'm paying for 3/4G service.

yeah, especially not at the stupid prices VZ just announced for Data (unlimited went away yesterday. Forever...)
16GB is pretty tiny, wish there was a 32GB version and I think I could make that work. I'll have to keep an eye on the developer threads and see if someone figures out how to get them to recognize external drives. One can always hope...

Yep. 8 and 16GB internal storage. It's essentially an iPad.

lol not really. It actually has more capability.... at 1/4 of the price.

A buddy of mine bought the Asus Transformer (microSD equipped). Seems real happy with it. The 16GB goes for $339 on Amazon. But quite honestly, any tablet that runs Android and has a SD/microSD expansion slot would be perfect in the car.

yup, I've been following the Nexus tablet for a few months now and saw the unveil at Google I/O online.
I'm quite interested in a tablet that has better processing power then the ipad and is priced like a Kindle Fire. win-win for people who need a tablet and don't want to spend a fortune.
(especially for car projects)

for personal use, I am still holding out for a 10 inch version.

Well I'm already locked in to an ATT data plan so its no biggy for me.

Regarding storage I've been using the galaxy nexus handset (16gb), uploaded all my mp3s to play, and have like 20,000+ songs / storage left over. I local cached my favorites playlist and have a few apps installed.... haven't even bothered to check local storage usage yet.

20,000+ songs huh. On less than 16GB. Well the math doesn't lie, they must all be ~24kbps. Think I'd rather listen to the engine than that...

^^ pretty sure the 20,000 song reference was in regards to Google Music letting you upload 20k songs for free.
Then you can simply cache some of your favorites for offline play and you're good to go. No crappy 24kbps needed.

Shell: can't wait to see when this is all done, you're doing awesome things here.

haha, what's crazy is I introduced Google Music to my GF and told her she could upload 20,000 songs for free.
Her reply, "That's it? But I have WAY more music then that"

million times nicer.
I have an unlimited Rhapsody account and then by the magic of software, those files get downloaded to my computer and then bingo bango, unlimited music at my disposal.

this is how my gf's music collection has exceeded 200gb or something crazy

Still have the obd bt rewrite. Lib voyager is a great reference point but not quite good enough for Mazda ecus.

More work needed around shortcuts, the music player, and the cruise control buttons if I can find them.

I just got my adapter the other day and downloaded an app for my phone called "torque" looks like it has JUST about everything built in, except tire pressure.

I'm going to start working on my own custom app that will work sort of like yours
