My Ice Link is finally here, but where to put my iPod?

Ok... so a while back I placed an order for an Ice Link. They said it was on back order and should be available in about two weeks. Today rolls around (3 months after the order was placed) and it finally arrives. Eh... no worries on the delivery timeframe, at least it's here. It gave me some extra time to think about where to stick my iPod. The problem is, even after 3 months I still haven't decided where to install it at.

After months of browsing the forums here I saw this post ( https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-interior-audio-electronics-24/pie-xm-satelite-radio-portable-mp3-player-install-48978/ ) about installing an XM display in the ashtray compartment. I really like the placement of it. It's a nice clean install location that's hidden from view. I opted for the Dension cable connection to the bottom of the iPod instead of the holster connection for this reason. I'm not worried about seeing the iPod display when in use. I'm just looking for a place to stick it so it won't get in the way when I'm driving.

I'm wondering if anyone has done something similar with their iPod inside the ashtray compartment or seen something like this. I'm one of those that doesn't like permanently modifying anything unless absolutely necessary and will probably look into the cost of the replacement part for the ashtray and 12v lighter just incase I need to replace it in the future.

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas,

-Hayden-

p.s. and incase it's needed: 2005 w/ NAV and GT package

I put my iPod in the coin tray above my left knee. No one sees it, so no one tries to play with it. plus you'll never notice there's an iPod hooked to the car when it's not in the car and the tray is closed, you'll just need a case or some liner, I've found jumping up in speed spits the iPod out the tray, I recommend the Contour Showcase keeps the unit enclosed and pretty free from scratches.

Wow.. I've never thought of the coin tray before. Do you have an ipod mini or a larger size one? Did you have to modify the tray at all? I didn't think there was enough room for my iPod Photo in the coin tray. Do you have any cable slack to pull it out just a bit incase you need to see the screen? Thanks again. Great spot!

3G iPod 40 GB, there's room the in tray with a little space that's why I said get a case. I have plenty of slack in the cable. I've got about 4 or 5 inches just incase I need to see something. Before you ask I didn't do any drilling for the cable I just wedged it between the clip for the tray, and the cable fits rather well, you just can't slam the coint tray shut or you might sheer the cable. Just watch your jumps in speed, 'cause you'll end up with a hanging iPod, I still do that from time to time, but oh well.

I wired mine into the center console near the extra 12 volt source. I got the cable and left enough slack so that I can pull it into the cup holder area or rest it on top of the console. I have the silicone ipod sleeve and it won't slide off the console under moderate turning. That way both myself and the passenger can control the ipod. When I park I simply shut the lid.

I put my Ipod in the glove compartment. It is easy to route the icelink cable to the glove compartment and I have enough slack that I can pull out the Ipod to look at it if necessary. The Ipod is hidden from view when I park which was my objective. The thing about the icelink is that I have to turn off the stereo before I turn off the ignition or the ipod will not star again when I start the car. And if I don't drive my car for a day, I have to start the car turn on the stereo, turn it off, unhook the ipod from the icelink cable, put the ipod in shuffle mode, hook it back up and then turn on the RX8 stereo. It works fine, if I follow these steps. It is kind of a pain, but it is great on a long trip and the steering wheel controls allow you to skip through the songs. If you drive your car daily, you may not have to nhook the ipod from the icelink cable, but you will have to turn off the stereo before you turn off the ignition or it will not start again when you restart. At least this has been my experience, every icelink unti may have its own quirks. But I am willing to p[ut up with a few quirks for the steering wheel control.

Thanks... that does sound like a bit of a pain to get it to work. With the time I had to wait because it was on backorder, I'm wondering it there was a new one put out. I'm half way through pulling apart the console now. Still haven't decided where to put the iPod though. Know of a way to tell if they have made any changes from the ones out prior to may?

The 1 inch by 4 inch circut board in heat shrink tubing has a Dension ice>Link Plus V2.02 sticker on it.
