Hi I was hoping someone could help me before I buy a rx 8. I am 6'6'' and I wanted to know if its possible to move the seat back like take the bolts out and acutally move the whole thing back. Also would it help if I got a smaller wheel. But i want to get a manual transmission. Thanks for any of your help.

 

Have you gone to a dealership and sat in one yet? Tall people do not seem to have any problems with the 8. It's us short / long torso guys with the problems
Also what do you mean be "got a smaller wheel"?? The steering wheel is not big and also would not be easy to change.

 

I'm 6' 6" myself and fit in the car OK - but have no sunroof, because that would make the ceiling too low. I didn't want a sunroof anyway.
Regarding the seat tracks, I'm driving with the seat pushed all the way back so that no-one could sit behind me. I have enough room, but barely. There is not much room to push the seat backwards more, but the couple inches before hitting the rear bench would surely help a bit. I don't know how easy or complicated it is to move the seat tracks back - actually, this is an interesting question.
I don't have the power seats (sport package only), so I suppose taking out the seat rails and drilling some new holes should be possible, or maybe new rails alltogether. Guess someone needs to go to a shop and ask

 

My roommate is 6'7" and doesn't seem to have too much of a problem sitting in the passenger side. The seats got to be all the way back and reclined a fair bit. If the seat wasn't reclined the sunroof would have to be open so his head could stick out.

He did sit in the driver's seat once. This is when I first got it and had a death grip on the keys. Wait a tick..... I still have a death grip on the keys. He could fit but looked a little tight. He said it wasn't bad but he would want to sit like that for long trips.

 

I'm about 6'5 and would be really interested in being able to move those rails back.

Over the years I've gotten used to having to recline the seat quite a bit since I have a thing for small cars and love sunroofs. BAD combo for a tall guy though...

With the power seats, how much more complicated would this become?

 

The bolt pattern for the drivers seat (power seat) is not symmetrical; it is also not flat. The mounting points of the seat are also part of the seat frame. To move the seat back would require custom welding / fabrication of new mounting points. Whether this can be done safely I do not know. The attached pic is of an aftermarket seat bracket for the RX-8. Notice how not one mounting point is the same, moving the seat back will not be easy.

 

I am 6'7", 250ish lbs, and have an 04 gt mt, with sunroof. I personally dont have any problems sitting in the car, but if i am in a hurry getting in, i sometimes bump into the radio area and hit a button. I do have to have the seat reclined back some, but no real big problems.

 

I am 6'3" with the sunroof and I barely miss the roof while sitting. I even have to recline slightly more than I would otherwise. If I was 6'6" I would have to recline to a lying down postion and use a mirror to see out the windshield. (HeHe)

 

I'm 6'3" also and I have the GT package. I have the electric seat and with it reclined, lowered and pushed all the way back I still have to slump in the chair to keep from brusing my hair on the sun roof. The only real problem I wish they would address is a lack of telescoping steering wheel. When the chair is pushed all the way back and reclined to fit comfortable in the car my arms are almost straight holding onto the wheel.

I don't believe this car was made with tall people in mind. You would think when selling cars in the USA they would take into account people over here are much taller on average.

I believe there is a very good reason for an aftermarket telescoping steering wheel for the RX8 !!!
