Mazda Navigation

Hi. I'm a 3 owner and I'm interested in hacking my navigation. Most of the 3 owners over on the forums don't own a nav and the ones that do don't want to seem to want to mess with it. I'm pretty sure our units are the same. I see so many threads here about modifying the nav and finding work arounds so I thought I'd ask here.

As you might know, the 2006 Mazda 6 has voice recognition. The 2006 3 doesn't and I'm not sure about the 2006 RX8. However, one of the users over on the 3 forums that owns a 2006 3 went into the hidden menu and found some interesting items.

There is a hidden microphone tuning menu and a mention of a "Traffic System". I know that Sirius and Navteq are developing a realtime traffic system like XM to be released next month, so that could be what it is referencing. So we could potentially add some new features. I think that firmware flash could unlock these features but I am unsure.

What do you guys think? Hopefully we can hack this piece!

Mazda switched NAV manufactures this year, so I doubt seriously that any of us have those options in the 04-05 8's. Looking at the screenshots, it appears you have different menus, so I think you wont get much help here as I dont think anyone here has a 2006 w/ Nav. we have also found secret menus, but they are not that interesting.

where did you find out that they switched manufacturers? menus can be changed from different firmware revisions.

From Mazda. It's part of the reason it took over a year to get a map update. dont even get me started on that. do some research with the search function. Maybe the new 06's have this system, but I can almost promise you the 04-05's dont.

the hardware is the same i believe. Its still using the panasonic menus.

I dont know what to tell you then. I'm just telling you what I heard from Mazda as well as what other people here have heard from their sources.

Yes, the hardware has been changed. It seems like the 2006 rx8, 2006 6, 2005+ 5 and the 2006 3 all use the new hardware(Just a guess based on the functions...but the mazda 5 and 2006 rx8 def use the same one).

Does the 2005 mazda 5 nav disable the ability to program while driving?

If not, there is our first clue to "fixing" the others!
