Maz6 HU veteran deja vu?
Well, here we go again. Just took delivery of a Winning Blue RX-8, and handed over my Maz6 to my son.
Just like the RX-8, the Maz6 factory HU (base) sucks. I ended up putting an Alpine 9813 in the glovebox of the Maz6, with the steering wheel controls running the unit by a remote module. Easy as pie, with the only problem being you can't see the radio display. Put Boston Z's in the front, JL amps for the front and the Image Dynamics Max sub. Sweet!
Again, just like the Rx-8, the old radio is needed to run the display, so you need the old HU, but bypass the audio portion.
Now, before I go through this again, is a remote HU the only solution? How about putting a head unit in the dash, with the old radio relocated?
More importantly, is there room in the glovebox for a HU (you need it within reach to put in a CD, although an MP3 would give hours of music)?

search around...no one has done a remote install that I can remember except a few added a 1-din 'hood' where the Nav unit normally is, if you don't have the nav unit then no problem
also do you have the BOSE system? or the Base (Maz6 has base I know but...) cause you could just put the MP3 player into the HU unit, then put in new amps, new speakers and a sub (or subs ) ...lots of people have done it and are MORE than satisfied...
from what I have read though...removing the HU to put something else in is a mess since the AC/Heater/etc. controls are wired into the HU

I'm curious, what do you want from an aftermarket head unit that is worth all of that effort? I know there will be some things, but I'm just curious what you are looking for.
