LED vs SMD LED

im looking to change my interior lights on my 04 rx8. i know all the size i need i just want to know the difference between SMD LED and regular LED. i tried searching and no luck.

these days any led "bulb" that you get for an automotive application is SMD or surface mounted device

Super Bright LED Car Lights, LED Bulbs, LED Headlights and Tail Lights

they have SMD LED and regular LED
