Square peg, round hole... You definitely are max out in terms of what you can put in the trunk. Thanks for the pictures. I think this helps me decide that I'll be putting only one 12" in my car. I gotta have some usable trunk left over.

When someone says that a sub sounds better pointed up or down or sideways, ask them if they have the EXACT same setup in the same type of car, and then find out why they think this way. The fact is that a huge box in a small trunk is really only going to work one way really well and poorly every other way. When you had that big box pointed upwards you were firing them at the rear deck. They were probably pretty close to it which caused a lack of proper airspace in front of the subs and consequently didn't acoustically load well with the interior of the car due to too little air in front of the box. when you pointed them forward, you fired them into a larger area and they acoustically coupled better to the cabin.

Here's the problem with traditional rear firing thinking. If a box is built to fit perfectly behind the rear seat and the subs fire backward, then how is the sound getting into the passenger compartment? the lowest frequecies pass easier so they come around the box in small spaces and through the rear deck leaving the higher bass tones to be confined in the trunk. This is one reason why the bass sounds deeper when the subs fire backwards. The other reason is that you have a bass frequency wave firing at the rear of the car then bouncing off the rear and working its way to the front of the car. Low frequencies are very long. The lower the tone, the longer the wavelength. This also serves to strengthen the lowend but allowing more audible lower frequencies to make their way forward due to an effectively greater distance. The acoustic loading on the woofers due to trunk space pressure may have an adverse effect on the sound though. A box designed on a computer doesn't even take this into account unless you are using some really expensive software and test equipment such as LEAP or LMS. You may need a bigger or small box than you though due to the trunk pressure. Now if you fire the subs forward, more acoustic energy is directed forward through the rear seat. It doesn't have to work its way around the box just through the seat. The higher bass frequencies will be more audible though due to the above reasons. Overall acoustic output will probably be greater as well. Box size will remain fairly predicatable as well. There is a reason that all home stereos, and all movie theaters have all the speakers (subs included) firing into the same room that you are listening from. It all really makes sense. When you fire a sub towards the back of the car into the trunk, you may as well move your home subs into the next room over and listen from there. They are both different rooms.

The other thing I would like to get to is that box design means more than speaker choice or size! A good ported box with a 10" will outdo a good sealed box with a 12" anyday and probably be smaller doing it. A ported box is going to be larger than a sealed box but instead of using 2 speakers sealed, use 1 ported. The single speaker although ported will be in a smaller box than the 2 would and still get as loud. In many cases the single speaker in a ported box will outdo the dual sealed box. You need to see an efficiency plot vs frequency to understand why this is so. When I built a show van for Rockford Fosgate 2 years ago, I used a ported box and it is extraordinarily loud. The box was tuned to 28hz and this is just an earthquake. It has 10- Power DVC 15's in a 34 cu. ft. single chamber box. It is very simple but effective. If we left it sealed it would have taken 20+ woofers and several times the power to match the output. Build a better box!

If anyone wants me to design a ported box around their subs I need 3 things from you. I need to know the Qts, Vas, and Fs of the speaker. They come printed on a spec sheet with the subs. If you don't have these numbers then i can't do too much without some digging for info. I'll enter these numbers in the computer and design a sealed and ported box. I will tell you cubic feet and port diameter and length. I'll also send you the frequency plot to compare them so you can see why one is better than the other. Not all subx work well ported but if you have one that does then you should be doing it this way.

I told you guys thatI still have trunk spaceif I really need it. I dont have the box nailed in I have it in a diagonal angle likeyou see with the left side down in the center lower hump and the rightside up on the regular part. The top right ofmy box is touching the roof of the trunk so when I makesharp stops or speed up it doesnt even budge. And since its inthat angle I can do sharp turns too and its still stable. When I want to use trunk space I can just lift it up and push it back sothat the subs face up and I can put it deeper into the trunk and use the hump for storage. So far I havent needed to though. I like using the backseats for storage too b/c I actually get to make more use of the suicide doors. Oh for the guywho says it thumps yes it does very very loud when I have the bass booster all theway up. The rearview mirror doesnt stop shaking and my brake pedal vibrates. I dont like driving like that though and I usuallyonly put it up when I go down to South Beach.

To answer a few questions i saw in this thread. The subs look to be KFC-w2505 (2002 or 2001 models) 12"s in 1.5 cubic foot sealed enclosure. the amp looks to be a sony.

If i were you, i would take that box out of the car (a basic square like that is very space inefficient) and mold the subs to either side of the trunk, giving them approximately 1.0 cubes per, in a fiberglass box.

I would also ditch the amp in preference to another, but that's just me. (JBL powervalve bp600.1 maybe)

And, the angle of a sub enclosure CAN affect in cabin performance, but it is almost a hit / miss thing. Pointing up may yield the best results for you and your application, but others may prefer them facing other ways.

I'm not too big into the "thump thump thump" anymore, but i do love installing and stereos in general.

demonfire I thought fiberglass boxes werepretty pricey? I know that the angle is a very important thing but you made a mistake. I dont have the subs pointing up I have thempointing to the rear headlights. I only flip over the box and make the subs point up when I need to make space to load somethingin the trunk so I push the wholebox into the deep backportion of the trunk closer to the back seats. I foundthat w/my enclosure the subs will not thump very much unless the box is sitting right next to the trunk right at the front where I have them right now. I think since they are so close to the trunk door the bass bounces off the front of the trunk making it sound so much louder and causingeverything to vibrate in my car. You say I should mold the subs to either left or right side of the trunk but I amalmost positive the subs will not be as loud. Ive tried many angles and the way I have it now is the only way the bass can sound both really loud and crisp. The only problem is I lose all my trunk space like this but for now I dont care too much about space sinceI justput stuff in the back seats. Gives me an excuseto open up the suicide doors all the time.

I meant that you could fiberglass them yourself, if you knew how, or wanted to try it. There are some pretty good tutorials online you could use.

I was being rhetorical... ie; an example of what may be best for someone may not be best for you.

Yes, you may lose some volume, but you will get a better looking enclosure, with more trunk space. Also, Small sealed enclosures can play very loud, even so. The subs firing off the back of the trunk lid may sound very loud because of the "reflections." Basically in the car there are 3 enclosures... the sub box itself, the trunk, and the cabin. So while what you have may be the loudest, it may not yield the ultimate results you are looking for. IF it does, stick with it. If you fiberglassed the trunk yourself, it could cost you over $100 anyway, so maybe just read up some on it, and decide from there.

As long as YOU like it, that's what is important.
