Install Possibilities

I was looking at a picture Yuhki took of his stereo after he removed it (attached), and I noticed that it appears to be a standard double-DIN sized unit, meaning that anyone putting in an aftermarket unit should have a straightforward time mounting it. The only difficulty would be getting the faceplate right.

I wonder if the BOSE part of the BOSE stereo is only in the amps and speakers (as opposed to any processing being done in the head unit itself). If so, then it would be very easy to use an aftermarket head unit with the stock amps/speakers, or use the stock head unit with aftermarket amps/speakers.

There are two-state modulation amplifiers mounted with the 9" woofers and a digital amplifier module with 5 channels of custom equalization and AudioPilot noise compensation mounted under the rear deck. Just pushing this thread a bit, one wonders if there's a way to play DVD's using the NAV system and getting 5.1 surround sound from the BOSE unit. It does have a center channel speaker. WOW....

Bulldogg,

The Bose system should already give a very good surround effect as is. I think DVD's would sound very good with the vocals very front and center and effects coming from all sides around you.

The Bose system appears to be completely self-contained all in the processor/amp that is mounted on the rear deck. I think there is no difference in the headunits of the Bose and non-Bose cars.

just thought of something, i didnt order the MD player, and i think its too late now. however, because of this, ive gotten what i think to be a bright idea. theres only one question which some1 on here will hopefully be able to answer, and here seh be! JARRRGGGHHHH! lol

ok:
mi thinking of adding an MD CHANGER somwhere in the car, location will not be any problem at all since they are so small and there is so many places to put it, plus its mountable from 0-90 degrees, which really translates into 180 available degrees of rotation (id think anyway...)
anyway, heres what im thinking, im thinking if i hook it into the space where the MD would go, id simply be able to push "tape/MD" then be able to play it, however, im hoping/thinking, that ill also be able to shuffle through tracks and MD's with the controls for the 6disc. do any of you think this would work?

maybe id have to have it wired into the controls at some additional $$ but maybe not, otherwise id have to install the controller instelf someplace...which wouldnt be all that hard or bad, but im not sure if it cmoes with one suddenly, no matter, could just get a diff unit.

ok, suggestions, anyone?

Interesting thought POOMan. Never heard of an MD changer. I'm toying with the idea of getting the MD player as an accessory, but if a changer does exist....

I highly doubt that that could work. First of all, the software that controls the MD unit is probably (99.9%) not going to be compatible with any aftermarket MD changer. Second, there won't be a way to change MDs, or some of the other functions.

You will have to have a separate controller for the MD changer, and then it will be pretty tricky to get the sound from the changer into the factory system. To do that, it could be very expensive, to the point where replacing the whole system will probably cost less than trying to cleanly integrate an MD changer into the stock system.

You should be able to get the MD module and it's trimplate after you get the car. Even if you did not order it with the car, it shouldn't be too late.

i saw a 20 cd changers advertised by one of the local electronics retailers the other day that worked via rf thru the radio. then the next day usa today(i think) ran an article on mp3 players that worked the same way. anybody heard systems like this before and if so how did it sound coming thru the radio. btw you could place the players just about anywhere you wanted to and work them with a remote. maybe there is an md player that works this way also?

yes, there is
the sound fromt he radio isnt like radio at all, the quality is very good because it is a directly wired signal (wired directly into the antena)

i was thinking that possibly the system would recognize the changer as an MD module if its put into that slot, but its unlikely...anywho...still thinking about it, but i dont know, i could always get a seperate controller, that wouldnt be too bad, what do you think?

the unit im looking at, sony md66-xlprf, has a wireless LCD and wireless remote, so i think it owuldnt be THAT bad...but i dunno, what doyou guys think?

You will still be limited by FM's limited frequency range and limited separation. You will also be susceptible to the antennae receieving external RF, so it's not completely quiet. And any tuner electronics which are designed to handle reception issues like multipathing, etc, will actually be a detriment to hardwired setups.

That doesn't mean that it won't work, but you aren't going to be able to avoid any of FM's limitations.

Sputnik is right. It isn't too late. Only the CD changer is port installed and has to be on your order. The MD player and MP3 are installed at the dealer. Should be sufficient time to contact your dealer, order it and have it ready for him to install when your ride arrives at the dealership.
