woah a few things:
a)which icelink did you order? just the icelink or the plug for the car too?
b) doesn't this plug into the PIE adaptor?
c) you might as well send it to an 8 owner with a pie adaptor already to test if it works
d)which Ipod do you have (out of curiousity)
e)which connector was he attempting to plug into
F) you shouldn't have to pay a restocking fee if they gave you the wrong one

ALSO...
G)do you still have it with you? take some pics of the connector and the device and post them for us, maybe we can troubleshoot

I've hat the unit since the Monday after Christmas. I called around to find someone to install the device, and found a shop in my town that would do the install. (Seems that a lot of shops didn't want to do just a "R&R" on a head unit, but wanted to sell all the bits and whatnot to do it.
They had not done an RX-8 yet, but after some noodling around, they did find out how to take out the head unit. Then the guy comes over and tells me that the plug on the end of my adapter won't fit in the port on the back of my radio!!!
I didn't believe him at first. So I asked him to show me. He was right.
The bad thing that happened after that, was that something got reset in my head unit and when I started my car to go home, the display or the radio woulnd't work.
So, out comes the head unit again, and they start checking fuses etc. Eventually, the owner of the shop did a Bench Check on the head unit and got it working again.
I was really afraid that they had screwed it up royally.
I requested an RMA and am going to eat a 15% restocking fee from DenisonUSA. I'm not happy about that, but what can you do?
I guess I'll be looking into getting an FM transmitter unit for my iPod. I was really disappointed. (as is my wife, since this was my big Christmas present from her, and I'm having to send it back)

I have the Icelink PLUS. (according to the sticker on the box)
There's several things in the kit.
First is the docking cradle for the ipod.
Then there's a small peice that has heat shrink around it, with Alpine to iPod on it, and a firmware revision . (without taking it out of the box, I believe it's 2.03)
I only know of one other 8 in my area. (guy with a black 8, GT with NAV, nice...) but I don't know the guy...
I was attempting to plug it into the empty socket in the back of the radio HU. There weren't really good instructions included with the kit concerning where the PIE is on the back.

Thanks for the help.
I may take a quick look at it tomorrow, but I am not sure at this point. I was so disguested tonight, I'm ready to give up on it...

Thoughts?

Whatever you decide to do, don't be fooled by the marketing BS and think that any of the FM modulators are in any way an acceptable solution. If you want to get one as a temporary solution, fine...that's what I did. But really...the sound quality you get from these things SUUUUCCCKKKKSSSSS..

This unit is a lot like the Alpine one and it uses its own interface. I like the one I got because I can still set up my play lists like normal. www.ipodlounge.com has some good info and the site I got mine off of is www.mp3yourcar.com

what do you mean set up play lists like normal. Also does this unit charge the player when connected? Do you see the song info on the radio?

Well took the plunge and got one of these last night, like the various features and firmware updates as improvements are offered and it's just a bit more then the Neo. Kind of Nervous about taking my radio out mainly on how to get the 4 clips off without damaging the faceplate.

I don't know where to post this, there are so many threads dealing with iPod, PIE, Icelink. It takes forever to reveiw them all and catch up with what is happening. I have been bugging my dealer for an iPod solution for two or three months. The dealer's head tech called me today. He had talked with some engineer at Mazda somewhere. This engineer is supposedly working on a dealer installed iPod solution for early RX8s. It sounds like the HU will still have to come out, be sent to United Radio for a firmware update, that is if you have a SAT button. If you don't then there will have to be a HU exchange, we did not get into the matter of cost. But for somone like me that has absolutely no electronic knowledge, I like the dealer solution as in if they install it they have to mantain it under warranty (hope). I am just not comfortable removing/installing anything that has wires attached (cars, computers, bombs they are all the same to me). I got the idea from talking with the tech that the track's tags will display on the receiver's display, that could be a mis-respresntation, but that is what I think I understood. I believe this guy as he approached me in Fox and Hounds Christmas night and said he was working on a solution, I wasn't sure then but he seems to be following through. Besides he was buying me and my girlfriend drinks. So if anyone in the North Houston area is interested contact Gullo Mazda, Conroe, TX (936) 441-9100, ask for Service Department then ask for Robert.

Peace-Out.

Anyone have a successful install yet? I'm dying to know if this works as well as promised, as it's a must-have for people w/o changers.

I just got off the telephone with Dension. The salesman told me that the RX8 Icelink Plus solution would not ship until the end of February. The tech at my dealer says they will remove the HU, exchange it for an updated HU, install the Icelink Plus (one that I purchase), put everything back together for $200.00 plus sales tax. Total will be around $450.00, that is if the Icelink Plus cost $229.00. I checked Thew's web site, he charges $50.00 to update the firmware, if you add shipping both ways I guess that could be another $25.00 so you are up to $75.00. For someone like me that knows nothing about electronic removal/installation another $125.00 seems worth it, especially when I add the aggravation factor I would have trying to do this myself. If you know how to do that stuff then Thew's solution is great, if you don't then I like my dealer's solution.

Peace

I have an icelink plus on order. FedEx says I'll have it the 19th of January, I should probably have it installed mid day after work. I'm running 9.55 firmware, though I am thinking of trying to get an '05 HU. Firstly for the firmware, sencondly just for the fact my defroster buttons are both cracked and it's really starting to **** me off since I've had the car for 14 months now. I'll post after I get everything installed and let everyone know what's going on with the plus.

cool...about your defroster buttons, there was a TSB about it, the dealership will fix them for free under warranty and should give you a rental car too

So, I wonder why the Dension Salesman is telling me the RX8 Icelink Plus will not be available until the end of February? I just talked to them last week.

Peace

When you get it can you answer a question for me please. Does the Icelink Plus plug directly into the back of the head unit or do you need to use the PIE adapter to plug into the back of the head unit?

That is Fed -Ex, they will deliver anything, believe me I know. What I can't understand is Dension selling you something now when they told me that it would not be available until the end of of February. So, who are they lying to, you or me? I wish the hell someone from Dension would give us the real story.

Peace.
