Well, I paid $41 for my remote on eBay, shipping included... $100 is way too much.
About $38 for the uncut key incl. sales tax, and a buck to get the key cut at the local locksmith - so $80 got me the whole thing. For me, it was worth...

I just bought mine for $50... I'm assuming $35ish for the blank at the dealer ... so it'll come out to right around that much for me as well.

does the dealer keep blanks in stock? or should I call ahead so have them special oder it?

I just bought a 2004 WB RX8 last week ( I will post pics. when I get a chance ) It only has one key and the key fob. I called dealer to see if I could get a 2004 key and fob and he said that they only had the 2005 flip key. He went on to say that the remote trans. would cost ~ $265, the key ~ $ 60 and to program ~ $70! So I'm looking at over $300 + tax. Is this rediculous or what! I've been reading the threads about the flip key and how to program remote and so forth, but I only have one key. I read that I needed both keys. I would rather get the flip key from, rx8 garage? I believe...but I need both keys to do the programming, correct? P.S I didn't know how much I missed the rotary until I got another one.

If you want the flip key, a good option is to get the remote on eBay since many non-eBay vendors price is much higher than that (let alone the dealer's). Then, you have to replace the already cut key - you can buy the flip key part either from mazdaparts or your local dealer for about $35. Getting the key blank cut should be very cheap at a locksmith - as said, I paid a dollar to get mine cut.
Programming indeed requires two working keys, but the dealer can program the remote and the key for you using their WDS machine. Unfortunately, in that case you have to pony up the charge for the programming.

Your Mazda dealer will cut it for free, even if you do not buy the blank from them. There is a DIY on how to code the remote and key to the car, so do that yourself and you will save some money.

I'm Having the same Problem. I only have 1 key and would like to program a second key to the car. Dealers are quoting me $150 for the key and Coding (Regular 2004 key). How can I buy the 2005 switchblade key and Code it to my car with only one key. I can't find the DIY Mentioned above.

Can someone please tell me why it's called a key "Fob" ? sorry, I don't know, and when I search google I get all this stuff about freight and shipping.

I would be a little concerned about all these used 8's being sold without all the keys and remotes that came with it. Where is the other key/remote now? Do you want someone out there having a key to your car? Will the car still respond to a key or remote if someone wants to use it? How many (and for how long are) old coded keys and remotes retained by the car and can they be removed from the car's system memory? Are they removed automatically when new ones are coded or would they have to be removed (or even can they) by the dealer with his WDS? Is the used remote you just bought still registered with a car out there and will it work on your car and the other one (is it still on the road?) If you bought a used car without all the keys maybe it would be worth the money to have the dealer code new keys and remotes if it also means removing the old keys and remotes from memory so they can't be used. These parts are components of a security system so I would think we should know how secure our systems really are.

FOB? You might start here Internet Oracle Online Encyclopedias for links to various online resources of knowledge (worth bookmarking, IMO.) Basically it is an old term relating to ornaments hanging from a watch chain or key chain that has evolved to include security remotes on key rings.

sure i can handle that. it comes from the germanic word Fuppe which means a small pocket. commonly used for the small pockets on the front of a waist coat or vest. these pockets were used to carry a watch before the wristwatch was introduced. the watch was commonly attached to the waistcoat buttons via a chain which was called the fob(for small pocket remember) chain. at some point the fashionable people started dangling little ornaments from the chain and those ornaments became known as fobs. later people started hanging bits of leather or rabbits feet etc off their keychains and the word fob was used for those as well. now those things have been replaced by the alarm/lock remote and since it generally hangs off the chain its called a fob.

now for shipping its F.O.B. for freight on board and is generally used to describe the wholesale price of goods being shipped- "that TV is $200 USD F.O.B."

Ebay is selling these complete new blanks/fobs for about $75. I just purchased it, I will update once I recieve it and program it.

So I just wanted to post my DIY experience in case anyone else needs the information. I purchased a 2005 Switch Blade from eBay for about $80 (after shipping) for my 2004 8. I took it to the Mazda dealership to have it cut.

The only problem I ran into was that Mazda wasn't able to match my current key because of the machine on site wasn't able to hold the switchblade and match it to my old key. So they went to the data base and pulled my cut by VIN #. When they cut my switchblade they cut the valet cut. So I returned it to them and they said that for whatever reason the master cut and the valet cut were the same on the database. It started the car, but wouldn't open the trunk or the glove box. I came to a dead end with the dealership. Oi, they cut it for free by the way...

From what I noticed at the time, was that the only difference between the valet and the master cut was the ends. So I went down the street to a hardware store and had the end sanded down to match the master cut. It turned out well and it became a master cut. (Thank god, since another blank is like $35)

FYI, Mazda wanted $80 to program the key. I couldn't help but ask why such a high price and they claim it is because some people loose all of their keys or do not have two master keys to use to program the new one. If you think about the trouble they have to go through without having any keys to use to program a new one, I guess that could explain the $80.

I used the link below to program the new switchblade, worked like a charm. Just to let you know, that you do not need other "fobs" to program. I just used two master cut keys to do mine.
