I sense some confusion here...the key will still have to have the proper cut to turn the ignition.

The "fob" section can go from car to car as a separate piece.

When you do the additional key program function you are opening the PCM to accept additional frequencies..(it can allow up to eight)

Be sure to have all the present "valid" keys ready for the procedure as it will invalidate any key that is not included in the key-on, key-off process.(including the valet)

I think that makes sense..let me read it...

yeah..I think I have it now.

strangely enough, the key programmi nworks, but the remote programmin doesnt.

does it matter how long i turn to ON position, or how long I press remote buttons for?

I'm tryin to program 3 remotes.

Do I leave the door open?

For each "verify taht door lock actuators lock, then unlock" step, do i just press lock once, or lock and unlock?

ok the key (sorry for bad pun) to doing this right is completing the task within 24s...

1. Close all doors, make sure the hood and the trunk is closed (doesn't need to be locked)
2. Now open the drivers side door
3. insert key and turn the key to the on position (beyond the acc position) and then off 3 times exactly...leave key in place
4. Then quickly press the big black button in the door jam 3tims...it is big and rubbery it does not look like a button simply a large, circular, black, rubber nub
this will cause a click each time you press it and then will cause the lock to make noise (unlock noise)
5. Now press any key on the first key fob twice, then the next fob twice and if you have a third press that one twice

Good luck if you are still struggling describe in detail here what you are doing

I don't use it...but yes it is difficult!

just wedge the ring open and slide it on...truthfully I'd be worried about it scraping badly, maybe you want to get the rubber coated kind

let me look at it and give you some more tips before you try

key ring insertion:
ok after further investigation it is definitely possible, if you till the ring at an angle while sliding it around it should reduce scratching on the front

but best idea it to probably use a clip type hook and connect it to the ring...like on a necklace the crab arm/pincher design or something

anyone else have suggestions?

Well after using the key for a few weeks now I have some more good news to report...

1. already mentioned somewhere but NO more scratching of the dash pieces...no more dangly FOB (transmitter) to jiggle around dinging up the area under the facial display (gauges)

2. the range is MUCH BETTER for the FOB transmitter! I was at the Mall of America visiting a few places and parked in a lot on floor 3...when I went to leave I went to floor 4 and thought the car was stolen (considering the floors are IDENTICAL). So I'm thinking...um maybe just don't see it and it is around this floor...so I set off the alarm just in case it would help...

and I hear it! but the sound is a muffled blaring! it is coming from below...through concrete, through rebar, and I wasn't even close to the location! My old fob I can only transmitt from several cars away...which is annoying when you want to make sure the car is locked from far away.

Went to the dealership and got mine cut this morning. Took longer for them to cut the key than it took me to program it. Lovin it so far! The keychain situation is kinda tricky. Can't seem to find one around the house that wants to fit... By the way Magellan they quoted me a price of 5 bucks to cut the key over the phone, but after getting there and having it cut they ended up not charging me (i think it was b/c i was the first one they have done so far or at least that particular guy)

I just bought an '04 RX-8; but it only had one key.

The dealer hooked me up with a key maker, but he said $90 for a Mazda Original blank.

Is this a good deal?

How does the key retract and eject? Is it a push-button mechanism or do you use a slide button on the side somewhere?

$35

hate to bring this back from the dead... but I have a question for truemagellen...

I called the dealership asking them about this because I recently bought an 05 key from someone that is already cut. I asked the dealer how much the key blank would cost and they quoted $35. Now that I look at your pictures that you posted of your key and fob... what will I be getting at the dealership? Your key (actual silver part seems to be attached to a piece of the fob already. Will it come that way (that will actually just snap into the rest of the fob) ?

Thanks for clearing this up for me

What you'll get is this. Yes, it snaps into the remote.

Hi All - I know there are a million posts saying the 05 key works on 04 cars and it does... it took me 5 minutes to program it all without one single glitch. Overall I purchased the key off of eBay for $100... so I saved quite some money compared to dealers. Anyhow I still think $100 is crazy for a stupid FOB/Key... what is up with car vendors charging 200-300 dollars? I want diamonds on my key for that price...
