Does your garage door have a rolling code? If so you will have to train the homelink to switch codes in synch with the door opener - first part should be thoroughly documented in the RX-8 manual and the other part should be in the garage opener manual.
Usually it's something like: delete existing code on homelink, get on a ladder and press 'learning' button on door opener, run to car and set homelink for 2-30 secs etc.

I might be able. I have homelink in a Volvo. It depends on your garage door opener. If it is newer than about 10 years, you will probably have to do it this way.
First, follow the instructions in the RX8 manual regarding getting the remote signal memorized by the homelink. In the Volvo, I had to hold down the button on the home link while pressing the remote within a couple of inches. This allows the homelink to capture the signal.
Next you have to tell the garage door opener that you want it to work with that signal. I believe my Genie worked this way:
There is a learn remote button on the drive box. Press that once, then press the button you programed in step one (the homelink button). Your drive box should have an LED that lit when you pressed the "learn" button. That should either blink, or go out I don't really remember. You then press the homelink button and the door should move, press it again and the door should stop. You should be good then.
Read the instructions for your opener on how to program it for a new remote. Getting homelink to store the code (as is probably all that is in your RX8 manual) is only half the battle. Good luck.

Read my post. You have a rolling code garage door opener (code changes every time you open garage) which is common nowadays. Your method of setting is only good for fixed code door openers (i.e. code is always the same).
My last 5 cars had homelink. For each vehicle the manual said more or less the same thing - do X and then refer to garage opener manual to activate learning mode. Just RTFM - it will only take a few minutes.

BTW, you don't have to disconnect the power from the door mechanism - that's only to prevent the door going up and down while you're programming the system. If it's a major hassle, and you can live with a couple of cycles of your door opener, don't bother pulling the plug.
However, you will still need to access the remote receiver in order to press the programming button, per pelucidor's note.

I messed with mine for a while, but i finally got it to work. Here's what i did:
First, you have to clear the Homelink's memory by pressing and holding I and III on the mirror until the light starts blinking rapidly. (like 20sec or so)
Second, program the homelink from your normal garage door opener by holding it right in front of the mirror and pressing the homelink button you want to program and the remote. This will program your mirror to act like your normal remote.
Next, I had to tell my garage door opener that it was okay to listen to this new remote, so i had to press and hold the homelink button, while someone else pressed the programming button on my garage door opener. (A red button recesed under the back light cover on my chamborlain). The light on the opener then blinked, indicating that it was programmed. The homelink button now works for my opener, and it actually has a further range than the cheesey handheld transmitter that came with my opener. I hope this helps you, if not, give me some more details on what kind of opener you have, and I'll try to get you some more help. I don't like the idea that someone is unhappy with ANYTHING in the 8... :-)
EDIT: OH Yeah, as another note... my opener could only be programmed with the garage door shut. Check the manual for your opener (if you have it) to find out if this is the case for you.

Glad you got it worked out. So, are you gonna go nuts and install keyless locks on your doors and remote lighting in the house? I think I will be doing the keyless door locks in the near future, but the lighting stuff is pretty pricey. The main thing holding me back on the door locks right now, is that the Kwikset keyless lock does not come in a satin finish - only a dull brasstone. Maybe if I find another brand...
Edit: We just closed on a new house yesterday, so we're doing a lot of prep-work before we move in next weekend. I had to provide my own garage door opener, which was fine with me because I got exactly what I wanted: The Genie Excelerator Lifetime Warranty. It opens the door at twice the normal speed for those quick, batman-like getaways. :D :D

something you might try is to change out the batteries in the gate remote. That is one of the recomendations on the Homlink site. It needs a real strong signal to program the homelink, so fresh batteries are the best bet.
