I ended up pushing the learn button on the opener followed by the homelink button to get the system to work (the second method).

Edit: Just re-read your post. Maybe you don't have homelink?

Cool Link......

During the procedure, you have to keep the remote REALLY close to the mirror, and hold the button for a LONG time, around 30 seconds, if I remember right)

Check in the owners manual. There should be a link in there for the homelink website.

For a quick tip (going from memory) instead of holding the garage door remote when the instructions tell you to, continue to push and release the garage door remote while holding the homelink button.

Good Luck.

That's what I had to do - my remote just wouldn't talk to the homelink - tried it several times - finally got the ladder out and used the learn button on the actual opener - worked like a charm. BTW. - I didn't have a manual and the button wasn't labeled, but I found the manual online and confirmed which button to push.

Push the learn button on your garage door opener (the actual motor should have a button on it), once you push this you have 1 min to push your homelink button in your car, hold the homelink button for about a min.

I pushed the learn button on my garage door opener while a buddy was in my car holding the homelink button. should be fairly simple. This info is in the car owners manual.

+1 as well for learn button.

However, I had to go through an additional step for one of our cars. We have two openers (one for each side of the garage), and the learn button was the only way I could get the RX-8's homelink to work for each one. But only one of the openers could 'learn' the signal from the homelink in our IS; I ended up using a combination of the methods described in the manual i.e. having the homelink register the signal from the handheld transponder first, and then having the opener learn the signal from the homelink afterwards. Can't explain why, but that worked.

I pull my battery each year for winter storage so I've had to program it a few times. Every time I had to replace the battery in the hand held garage door opener. I also had to go far away from the garage itself, if I'm in the driveway it wont program.
